This was my first post-Dead show and I've got to admit I was pleasantly surprised. Upbeat all the way. No slow tunes at all, except maybe She Belongs to Me. Weird song placement. Not Fade Away-3rd tune, 1st set. The band was tight. Besides having the greatest name I've heard in a while, Jimmy Herring played some kickass lead. He filled the lead spot faithfully without coming off as a Jerry Garcia clone, though he did noodle around a little much at times. They played some crazy tunes I thought I'd never hear live such as The Eleven, which rocked, and Viola Lee Blues, which I've got to say was a bit lackluster. Mickey sang lead on Fire on the Mountain--very cool and bizarre. A great version of Estimated Prophet. Herring had the sound down pat. It seemed like the show slipped a notch during Strawberry Fields Forever > Viola Lee Blues, a tune I've always wanted to hear, yet I could have done without this version. As for the crowd, it seemed the majority was hammered on booze and the psychedelic vibe was definitely amiss. I saw whole sections of people sitting through the whole show, eating their popcorn, and sipping their $6.25 Bud Light drafts before falling asleep halfway through the 2nd set.
I have to admit, I've never been so crankily critical of Grateful Dead shows. I'm obviously still not over the end of an era and am ultra sensitive to the new regime. All in all, I've gotta say, I had a blast and look forward to shows in the future.

Bobby starts off the night with Playin, and of course slips up in the first verse. Bobby seemed kind of out there for the most part. Bobby played another tune before going into NFA. A song I'm not usually into, but it got the crowd going. The Eleven complemented this tune quite nicely. Then, a Box of Rain, of which I have heard better versions. They ended the set with Estimated>Bertha>Fire, All of which were top notch, except for the Fire with Mickey on vocals. I definitely think Bobby or Rob should handle the vocals on Fire. I think Mickey wrote it so I'll give him credit, though.
Second set: All done very very well. I noticed Jimmy Herring seems to be holding back his true potential. I also noticed they only played two out of three verses for Viola Lee. I think they left the last one out. Again, Bobby slips up on the occasional line here or there. Susan sang her heart out on King Bee, but could have been more audible during other songs. Touch of Grey encore--"We will get by..." Overall an excellent show. Surprised that they are repeating songs already, but I am anticipating the Philadelphia shows.
