Refreshing... Energized... Fantastic. This is my description of the band built from the remaining members of the Grateful Dead. The biggest mind-blowing aspect of these shows is that it's not a 70's show; 80's show; 90's show; it's straight fantasy Dead. It's like something you would put together in your head on the way to a show in 89. "Can you imagine if they pulled out a ....." Conseco was a prime example of this.
Cold Rain and Snow has been known to be the Dead's sound checker for levels and monitors. Apparantly, not for the Other Ones. The strongest aspect of this song lies in the harmonized chorus. The Other Ones were in perfect harmony in Indy. Rob, Bobby, and Phil sound strong singing together this Fall. The highlight of the first set was easily Till the Mornin' Comes. Jimmy Herring nailed the melody, and Mickey and Kreutzman were in perfect unison throughout the first set. They are a real team to watch. Just staring at them while they jam--it is fun to watch Mickey Hart's exploding technique. Jack Straw closed the set with a boom, and it is amazing that Bob can still be so commanding vocally. Nobody sings like Bob Wier.
Second set was pounding with a nice Sampson and Delilah. I have never heard Mickey and Billy play this song together live. It is really cool to see indoors, with a true echoing feel. They tore it up. God knows I asked for a Cosmic Charlie all week and got it. Kind of slow moving but one that will evolve for sure if a summer tour rolls in. These guys are tight. Tight like Bobby always wanted them to be. Deer Creek (as we still call it) is already warming up the stage for these cats next summer! Jaw-dropping show...
