Reviews
Well let's see. We arrived in the parking lot about 4:30, so we opted to skip Steve Winwood in order to meet up with friends and make some new ones. I never saw anything resembling shakedown, but there were a handfull of people selling the usual things. We went in during the last song of Winwood's set (Gimme Some Lovin')? We had great seats, sec 102 row D. The show was far from a sellout as they were offering to upgrade lawn ticket holders to pavilion for 10 bucks. Anyway, I was able to call Jack Straw from Bob's initial tuning. This and The Wheel that followed were a good warmup. Then comes Crazy Fingers... and I really miss Jerry. This was one of those songs that you could get lost in back in the day. Nonetheless, it was nice. Steve Winwood came out and played and sang Loose Lucy, another "I miss Jerry" song, but he did a good job. Promised Land was rocking per usual, Joan sang Built to Last, and they finished up with Mason's Children. I must say that Joan is kind of different; I'm not sure what to think. During the second set she seemed more like a cheerleader than part of the group. She wasn't out during every song (which was fine by me), but she did an okay job overall. The second set was very nice... short drums into Mountains and then Weather...Let it Grow. This is where "it's on now." Let it Grow had some of those moments where you could shut your eyes and get lost a bit. Slowed down with Roses and then my highlight: Shakedown. Really slow beat but very strong. They could have played this the entire second set and I would have left with a smile on my face. Reuben, UJB, and one of my other favs--Help-Slip-Franklins--to end the set. Nice encore of Aiko. Overall this show was fun and a lot had to do with my fourth row seat (not counting the pit area). VA Beach was much more uptight when I saw Phish there in 97. This crowd was not only smaller but much less rowdy. It's not the same without Jerry, but I'm aware that this is The Dead, not The Grateful Dead, and it's still some of the best live music that's out there today. I'm just happy to still be able to see and hear it. I hope the remainder of the tour goes well.

Thanks again to GDTSTOO I was in the front row at my hometown venue. It rained all damn day but finally stopped about an hour before show time. I made it to my seats just as the boys were coming on stage. Bobby brought out a nice Tele that he used for the whole show. After a small amount of tuning Bobby led the band into a nice and mellow Jack Straw which went into a well-played Wheel. (On a side note, David Hasselhoff was at the show for most of the first set.) The band then went into a nice jam followed by a superb version of Crazy Fingers. I didn't think it could be done without Jerry but Jimmy hit the notes and Joan nailed the vocals perfectly. Steve Winwood came out a sang a rockin Loose Lucy. By this time, I knew this was going to be one of those well-played shows. Bobby started a well-played but predictable Promised Land. The Built to Last was nice, and Mason's closer was great. Phil was really enjoying himself during the set. Joan really does wonders for songs that Phil sings. You'll have to hear it to see what I mean. The first set ran about 72 minutes. Overall 1st set rating would be an A.
The second set started off with a nice Drumz segment. I'm really glad to see Mickey and Billy at it again. The boys came back on for a nice Jam and went into a nice Mountains of the Moon. Bob had the acoustic strapped on and added nice touches to the song. Some set lists have Black-Throated Wind being played next. It was NOT played. I've been waiting for a Weather Report Suite and I got it. Damn these guys played it beautifully. They nailed all of the vocals perfectly. The Let It Grow rocked the house. Jimmy wailed on the solos and Phil was Phil. It was some of the best stuff I've heard anyone do in years. No More Do I followed. Then a beautiful Must Have Been the Roses. Did I say Joan can sing? WOW! Then SHAKEDOWN. Holy Crap, they jammed the hell out of this one. Jimmy had that Mutron dialed in just right. Bob's rhythm was fantastic and Phil was rumbling. A nice fast-paced version of Reuben and Cherise with Joan on vocals. They transitioned into a well played Uncle John's which went right into a smokin Help>Slip>Franklins to close the set. The set ended at 10:57. There is an 11:00 PM curfew so I thought we may not get an encore but everyone came back on stage. Mickey started adjusting his mic so I thought Only The Strange would be up, but to my surprise he sang Aiko. The band played it well and ended the show about 11:12. Everyone left the stage except Phil, who gave the donor rap and wished us well.
Overall this was a very well-played show. Everyone on stage had big grins on their face most of the night and seemed to really be playing at their best. I hope the rest of the shows are as good as this one. I can't wait for the CD to arrive in a few days.
