A good show...
Bookkeeping details: acoustic until "Eyes of the World," when Jimmy Herring picked up an electric guitar and stayed on it thereafter. Jeff Chimenti and Rob Barraco alternated on a grand piano throughout, with Barraco providing back-up vocals from a stand-alone mic on occasion. Joan Osborne wasn't there, and no reason was given. John Popper, who looks great, played harmonica, including an extended lead, on "Eyes," and everybody -- see setlist -- came out for "Not Fade Away." Bonnie took a solo during that tune.
Overall, quite a good show, and much longer than planned. (They were supposed to be off by 11; they played until about 12:30.)
They got off to a very slow start, with a Monk-like jam -- Wavy Gravy told a story about opening for Thelonius just before they came out -- and then a "Truckin'" that never took off. This was partly because Phil had major equipment problems and actually ended up playing it without using his earpieces. And it sounded like it.
"Tomorrow Never Knows" really ushered in the show, and things were wonderful from then on.
Highlights for me besides the wonderful Beatles cover were a sweet "Down the Road," some wonderful work from Herring on "Ramble-on Rose," a very spacy and yet well developed "Dark Star/Eyes/Dark Star" -- Popper and Herring spent a lot of "Eyes working together to great effect -- and then a train wreck of a transition to a blistering "One More Saturday Night" which evoked lots of grins on-stage and in the crowd.
It was my girlfriend's very first Dead show; it isn't her kind of music, really, but she loved it, and said, "I don't know how much I like the music, but they care so much about it, and they're such accomplished musicians. It's hard not to like them."
