Reviews
I never thought I'd say/write this, but the Dead should dismiss Warren and Jimmy and bring back Mark Karan. Warren singing is good on some songs, but a downright drag on songs like Reuben & Cerise, Sugaree and Comes a Time. He does not sound soulful, but instead completely dreary and depressing. He sounds like he's about to fall asleep. Bring Joan back!
On guitar, Warren barely had any leads, he played rhythm behind Bobby. No room for 3 guitars. Either Jimmy or Warren has to go or better yet, bring back Mark Karan. Warren's best work is with the blues jams of ABB and Mule. Grateful Dead music's looseness does not suit him well. Same with Jimmy. I really don't care for the speed metal repetitive licks he throws into songs and his jamming is not impressive. His licks all sound the same and are not very inventive.
Best songs from 6/19/04:
Weather Report Suite, Terrapin Station, Sugar Magnolia and Touch of Grey.

Alright kiddos - here's my last review as i have to work tonight and cannot attend the show. But that's okay, because last night me and jean got one fucking magical show, best out of the Red Rocks run so far by far. My god. The weather was beautiful as the Subaru tore down I-70 towards the Rocks, by the time we arrived the lots were already packed, but the seats weren't, and we were able to get seats in lovely row 35. Settle down, watch Hunter do his wonderful thing. Lights go down - dead time :)
I:
Alabama Getaway - Solid and standard, yet you could tell right away that Warren was very on tonight. The song itself was short, but it was true to many other Alabama Getaway's and was a perfect show opener. Energy was flying high in the audience very quickly.
Black Throated Wind - No segue, the Dead showed that they could bust out a first set a-la Europe 1972 sets, lots of short songs packaged tightly and rightly. Black Throated Wind was a gem, much better than the verison i recieved 12/2/02. The whole crowd was way into BTW.
Operator - Awesome surprise. Slow and very jammy. Warren sounded excellent on vox and guitars. Everyone was very tight, and the weather was beautiful and the crowd was singing along.
Hell in a Bucket - A standard yet energy filled verison of this song. Another sing along where the crowd was hopping. You could tell this was an 80s bust out night. Especially considering the 90s Broken Arrow was next. Once again, no segues, but Jimmy's liquid fingers were amazing and he nailed his solos.
Broken Arrow - Amazing tune. once again, i haven't gotten one of these since Fall Tour 02. The boys hit all the harmonies perfectly and did a great job. While it's not exactly a energetic song, the crowd was definately DEADicated enough to sing alonh.
jam>Baba Jingo > - Excellent jam into this tune. Everytime i heard this song, it sounds better and better. Mickey's rapping a little less, as i pointed out yesterday, but i'm not sure that's better. but the energy during this song is awesome. The boys play very well with each other, which worked great.
Cassady - Only one complaint with this. the jam out of babajingo had to nose dive so that we could make it too cassidy. It would've been easier if they had given up seguing the two songs, but it was alright. The cassidy was slow, but sweet. Perfectly nailed on every solo, and Chemini shows how much of a mad man he is on the keys
Hey Pocky Way - Excellent closer. This song went great, and everyone was up on their feet and everyone was siked. This was one awesome song. Warren hit the vox and the solos as if he had been in TOO since day 1. Jimmy was fire as usual. Amazing way to roll out the set.
Still a clear night, though one can see some lightening out over Arvada from the rocks, which gives a cool polarity in weather's you can only get in the mountains. after another decent length setlist, the boys come back out.
II:
Queen Jane> - Excellent rendition. True to 90s dead, pleasant, enjoyable, nice solos.
Jam> - Excellent jam. Very spacey, but Jimmy uses his skillful hands to field the space which, while containing the elements of some noodling, has direction unlike he had expressed during the 03 summer tour. I remember once that someone said "Jimmy rocks until Phil told him to stop listening to so much Jerry. He lost some inspiration when he cut that part of his repitore out of his musical rotation." Maybe one might suggest this jam and the following song as more jerry inspired....
All that We Are - And now people say "wow, he said this song was jerry inspired, yet it was only brought out august of 03" but yes, the solos that Jimmy and Warren busted on this song where unbelievable. One could tell that Warren decided to give up his "timing" on this song in exchange for slick fingers, which played well with Jimmy's natural slick fingered style. This song is still a new song, but the boys obviously love this baby. Maybe this song shows a little much how we all should feel about why this band exsists, "i've got to keep moving - i got to keep on"
Weather Report > Let it Grow > - Best non-gd verison i've heard of this song. I swore i was calling it for 6/18 with all the rain and whatnot. But with the lightening out over Arvada and the wind blowing through a clear night at the Rocks. While they played they looked very relaxed. Unfortunately, the jam out of all that we are nose dived, but that's the price you pay in going from an electric to acoustic bobby, still, the boys covered it up beautifully with the WRS. Warren and jimmy hit all the right notes in their seamless solos, Warren leading the jam while Jimmy fleshed out his solos with wife, extravagant burst of finger blurred jamming delight. Superdank! The jam was very long, and they came back into the "What shall i say shall i call it by name?" part out of the jam perfectly, all right on time.
Drumz>Space - Amazing. by this time it's been close to 48 hours with only 2 of sleep, and i had to work the morning of 6/19, so i was damn exhausted after the night before and everything else. So even if i had only been smokin, i was trippin out off exhaustion. The drums had enough energy to keep me up and dancing, the space tugged my brain back and forth through mind melding xylophone goodness.
Comes a Time - beautiful. simply beautiful. Warren hits all the words perfectly, could make a grown man cry. makes you think of loved ones lost and the future and what you can do with what you got in this blessing of life. Makes you think about the big Jer Bear watching over this delightful ritualistic gathering with a smile and maybe a guitar to jam along.
Unbroken Chain - I love unbroken chain. I don't love Phil's voice. I do love how much energy this song had. i do love how Phil sounded better than he has in years. i do love that Warren kicked the crap out of this solo, trouncing what was previously the best non-gd Unbroken Chain on 8/5/03 in deercreek. Also on that date had been my favorite post GD terrapin, but that was all about to change...
LWAF > Terrapin - They did this perfectly bringing more of the sound from the studio verison. It was perfect. They brought back the "doodle do doos" (i don't know if you have idea what i am talking about) so that they made everything sound clear, even with three guitars. Jimmy brought out a monster solo in what had been a somewhat quiet yet perfect night for him. He nailed all the solos the played, as he had the previous nights, but allowed for Warren to play more, so that he could play off Warren as opposed to the manner of dueling (which i also enjoy) in the previous evenings. It was awesome, as i often think the way these two play off each other, dueling or cooperatively (i mean, in a sense it's always cooperative), you know what i am saying....
Rubin and Cherise - Excellent. Amazing. "Surprise! Rubin baby! Wooooo!" While the drums weren't as "Mardi Gras" as the rest of the band, they kicked this one out so that all were shaking their ass. Warren sounds great on this, and while he stumbled at some points - understandably as it is a long and unrepetitive song - he made up for it with amazing guitar work. Again, Jimmy speaks up with his guitar for another perfect solo.
Sugar Mag - Flawless sugar mags > ssdd. While standard, it was appropriate. This setlist was very GD even with some post GD songs and the Rubin. It felt just oh so right. It was definately a pleasant pleast surprise when we didn't get the OMSN encore.
E: Touch of Gray - Had to start leaving at this point. Said bye bye to the boys for the summer (except maybe Alpine and maybe Utah) :(. The Touch sounded standard but spotless. Wow, what a fucking amazing show. On so little sleep i have no idea how i drove all the way back to fort collins, but I know i slept 13 hours and woke to the thunder shouting "I am, I am" this afternoon at 1. Hop on the bus brothers and sisters, the boys sound oh so hot this year. Holy cheese cake. Saw 4 shows this past week, all four awesome. Not all spotless, but 1/2 of them were flawless, and the other two were A quality shows. Go go go! or burn burn burn! but see this band, don't eat your organs, register to vote, love your brother and sister, and keep truckin on. love ya'll.

Go go go! or burn burn burn! but see this band, don't eat your organs, register to vote, love your brother and sister, and keep truckin on. love ya'll.
