Reviews
on balance a pretty disappointing show and i am a pretty benevolent fan/critic. granted there were some pretty hot tunes (e.g., Mr Charlie, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, acoustic Ripple encore, The Last Time, but unfortunately there was some serious mediocrity mixed in. here comes sunshine opened the first set and it sounded like a sound check (which it could have been, but they had already done that at 4:00pm or so I thought) - it didn't even feel like we were underway. jack straw was next and pretty cookin'. then dark star followed (i still haven't gotten used to them moving the tunes around, traditionally a second set tune, often out of space, this felt way too early for some way out improv).

other show thoughts:
warren haynes is a great addition to the sound (organic allman's guitar sound is very nice) and he is a stronger vocal complement to bobby than joan was last summer, he now takes over some of the jerry tunes (e.g., stella blue) which was good, but not great because jerry would tell you the story, warren is in love with his voice so it just doesn't come out with the same sincerity, but great tones. another drawback is warren's mized bag of covers he is helping the dead channel: the lowlight of the show was a take on U2's "one" which pretty much left me crestfallen (i know they were practicing it last month in San Rafael, and it's on Warren's new solo album, but say it ain't so...U2 is not the Beatles, Merle - see also Madman in AZ and Over the Hills in Sacto - yikes

the light show was phenomenal

it should be noted that i saw them last summer and they rocked, i had seats then and lawn this time maybe that was the difference?

I normally clamor for tapes from every show I have seen, at least i can rest easy on this one, no need for it, i would much more happily download 4/19/82 and be much happier

hope this was helpful
