They finally clicked in my opinion last night. Seen 4 shows of this tour and this one sounded the best and how can you go wrong with Branford!
Gerard, Red Hook
Great seats, crap arena, very weak show. Branford was awful, luckily way underamped so hard to hear him, but seemed constrained by the relentless major key 4/4 of the tunes. Huge seller. Warren Haynes was flat and uninspired, playing faceless solos where Jerry wud have been more adventurous. After solid Worcester and Nassau concerts, even good acoustics on the floor cud not improve extremely weak singing, Birdsong basically finessed by Weir, sounded like Dylan on off night. Ya that bad. Plenty of empty seats too, did I miss a memo?
Nestor, Manhasset
Good set list...but a lazy crowd. 7000 empty seats and no energy.
John, Morristown
Of the 3 shows + Gramercey that I have been to last night was the worst, but it read the best. Whatever it was that they had Satureday was just missing. May be it's just that Satureday at MSG was so good that it's become a bench mark of grateness for me. Or maybe they were just slowing things down for Branford. Warren continues to be great. Like Ship of Fools the other night, High Times was probably the best delivered song of the night. Hopefully tonight is killer.
Chris, Bernardsville, NJ
Nestor, could not disagree with you more! We saw first Worcester and Nassau, and thought this was by far the best! Other than Bobby forgetting lyrics (duh) the band was tight, rested and enthusiastic. Warren took more of a lead and wailed on Mr. Fantasy. Scarlet/Fire was amazing. High Time was a treat. A terrific show that we couldn't be more happy to be at!
Craig, Syosset
What time did they hit the stage on Tuesday? I'm going tonight.
Benjamin, Piscataway, NJ
This show had its highlights and a some lowlights. I wasnt at the other shows, so this was my first THE DEAD w/ this lineup.
Warren will NEVER be Jerry, so why go there? He did a damn good job. Considering the previous THE DEAD used 2 lead guitars to fill in for Jerry, Warren proved his merit.
The DRUMMERs were KICK butt... They almost seem to just keep getting better. The song selection was decent, though I was hoping for them to bust into a Help on the Way >>> Franklins.....
We got the Franklins, but I had left before the encore.
The Birdsong was a bit cheeze.... but ending the show with Eyes
was NICE.... and it was a real nice Eyes.
New Potatoe Caboose .... was RIGHT ON TARGET....
my 2 cents.

If the place was empty last night...maybe more midwest shows besides only 2 in Chicago. Maybe the tour did not need to be so NY/NJ heavy.
CG, Wisconsin
CG... I hear ya. I think everyone blew their cash in NYC on Saturday night. Between the $100 tix....$45 parking...and $9 beers it adds up.
Phish might be able to pack an arena with their unemployed followers on a Tuesday...but its tough to get us employed old timers out on a Tuesday. Most of us are still coming around from the Saturday show.
John, Morristown
JOHN ----- I agree, lazy crowd, no energy.
NESTOR & CHRIS ------ Different shows for different folks. So sorry that this show didn't do it for you guys. It was (perhaps) my favorite of the seven I have seen since Albany.
The lovelight was........dare I say......a tour highlight!
Man, they were solid all night.........even good ole Bobby!

Critics can critique all they want. Hearing the songs I want to hear in an amazingly presented order by far makes up for some of the shows I used to see even with Jerry. The world could do without, for a while, songs like Memphis Blues, Walkin' Blues, Desolation Row, Victim or a Crime and Corina. Three shows will not be enough for me this tour. I certainly would like to see more, but only if I win the megamillions........One Show At A Time... Mark W...
Mark Weed, Union, NJ
Garbage. At the start of the show I couldn't figure out why the top rear of the arena (which has better sound than the sides of the arena) was covered in a gigantic black veil. By the second set it all made sense. Older fans like myself and others I talked to last night realize that this is just not that great of a band anymore. It's become a Las Vegas review only with a larger song catalog and without the main cog. Very sad to watch.
Sal, Hoboken
I hate to say it but I agree with Sal. For those who still enjoy it, good for you. For those who remember it and have not seen them without Jerry....stay far,far away!!!!
Craig, Holmdel, NJ
There is a middle ground here somewhere. I am an old time deadhead. And i don't mean an "I've been seeing them since 1990" deadhead. I mean 500+shows, started in 1968, etc. That's not to say I know any more than anyone else, but my opinion is certainly as valid as anyone else's
I don't expect today's product to reach the heights of a 2-9-73, 8-6-71 or 12-29-77. And I don't even think that "it can't be good without Jerry". i saw some Other Ones stuff (the second round with Apfonso Johnson instead of Phil) that was really really good. Certainly better than the last couple of years of Jerry. I saw too many shows WITH Jerry in the 90's where I felt ripped off.
So I don't expect miracles out of these guys. But the "we should be grateful for anything we get" attitude is ridiculous. Bad is bad...

Anyone know what time they will open the parking lot in Philly and what kind of atmosphere to expect in the lot?? I have seen many shows in the past, but never in Philly.
Row Jim, Richmond
thank you phi, i'm reading this page and its drenched with negativity. I thoroughly enjoyed the show and i was in section 210, in the highest area you could possible be. Energy was intense, lost of whistling, screaming, moaning! came in during Fire. couldn't just get into since i just rolled in, birdsong nice flow into the show for me. hilight was feel like a stranger first set.
warren sounded on, and besides a few blimps here and there, 1st set sounded good, building a spacey cosmos vibe.
2nd set new potatoe was good, now i'm in space. milestones got the energy back up. i also like the lighting used to. at one point, becuz i was so high up, i could the crowd and music and an organism, moving, and being hilighted by the lighting color, sounds and psychology of it all. thanks for the music. Dead or STFU!

I am really tired of all the negativity. People are being too critical, instead of appreciating what these guys are doing to keep this music alive. Jerry's gone and nothing's gonna bring him back. His spirit lives on in our hearts and in the music we love so much.
I had a great time Tuesday night, and would rate this one among the best I've seen in a long time. I've been criticizing Bobby for a long time, and I even enjoyed him at this show.
I think it's a damn shame that after getting shut out across the board for tickets to the MSG show, the Izod Center would be 40% empty for this exceptional show.

Did not attend. I read all the reviews and then listened to the download. Great setlist, but uninspired playing. Pretty sad to have Branford sit in and be so lame. That was the worst dark star I have ever listened too. I think it defines the night. Please listen to the DC dark star and hear how it should be played.
CG, Wisconsin
As great as Branford is, his appearance doesn't guarantee a good show. I saw him sit in at the LA Sports Arena in 94 and it was dreadful....not his fault, but..
Alan, Burbank
Alan - some people get it, you're one of them. As for creds, I have two degrees (in cello) from Juilliard, and toured in the orch with Emerson Lake and Palmer in '77 playing MSG 3 nights in July as well as Soldiers Field among others, and also played with Marvin Gaye @ Radio City abt a yr before his father shot him. Was at Watkins Glen in 73 having just graduated from high school. So I KNOW when I'm faking it on stage, and pay attention when others do. Love the Dead as much as the next guy, actually looked fwd to hearing Warren's fresh take on old tunes. In Worcester he laid down some lines that were totally outside the box, across the bar lines and fluid and coherent. Here he seemed tired, stayed within 3 note range for extended periods meaning he had run out of gas. Doesn't make him a bad guy. Branford looked embarrassed and superfluous, but as far as some of the other reviwers above are concerned, guy cud take a dump onstage they wud be impressed. Doubt any of those bother to even listen to jazz, let alone opera, chamber music etc. Anyway, the Dead jams have become too cluttered, swapping numbers of notes for space and quality. Drums kits generally undermiked and thta's a shame, and the vocals are tatterred. Look, it takes a lot to go out night after night and play for 3 hrs, I know. Sometimes u hit it and sometimes u don't. Pax to all.
Nestor, Manhasset
As impressive as it is to know the amount of music these fellas on tour do, we complain at a few mistakes (or did they mean to mess up..doodododoo)? As impressive as the improv skills are we say "it's not as good as Jerry?" For all those appreciate music, yes there will never be another Jerry, but at least his music is being rocked hard even in 2009. What a thing to celebrate. Thanks for all those shooting those positive vibes. No wonder the music is only improving with every show. Just hate we couldn't make em all...
John Stoltz, Berea, KY
It is more than "a few mistakes: IMHO. I also have made clear that there HAS been SOME post Jerry music from these guys that I loved. There was SOME stuff I have heard from this tour that i liked even.
Nestors post is right on the mark. Plus, even though he is one of my favorite guitarists in earth, Warren isn't the right guy to make this work (if there is such a guy...)

Saw Rat Dog /Allmans at PNC last August (Anyone remember the epic thunderstorms?). A lot of people left after RD finished. I can accept that Warren is an Allman Brother, but that's where it ends for me. I give him all the credit in the world to step outside off that stage, and then have to be "Jerry" without being "Jerry", and not be Warren of the AB's all at the same time. I don't think he matches up well with Branford either, whom I could have also done without. Listen to Warren on"Watchtower" from the NC show. That's his speed. This was more of a 1990 " Without a Net" show. That said, at a cost of around $28.50 an hour (based on a $100 ticket for 3 1/2hr. show), it was a no brainer. A stroll thru Shakedown Street before the show was entertaining as well.

WoW,
I cant believe that lot of you hated the show. I thought it was great I think a lot of you have to realize the Dead are back in the underground now so they wont be filling Giants stadium anytime soon that is going to take a few more tours as well as their sound to develop. I disgree with the folks that say Warren is not right fit did you here Dear Mr fantasy that smoked. Please remeber that Jerry is not coming back their sound will be changed forever so try your hardest to enjoy! l Love ya

Again, I think Warren is great. I just don't think he works here. And I don't expect Jerry or for it to sound like the GD with Jerry. But the band needs somebody who can/will drive the music and Warren, for whatever reason, is too laid back. There are a few guys I think could do a great job, but they wouldn't take the gig...
Alan, Burbank
Mark Karan from Rat Dog would fit very nicely. His style and sound is already very vintage "Dead" like. He also uses a Gibson SG, same as Jerry did.
Kenny, Westfield
I think they have Warren on a leash, just like any other player who stepped in, Jerry led 95% of the time and the rest fed off of that, Jerry could step up and play BAM this is the way we're goin' with this jam....everyone who's played his part is either not comfortable enough to do it or they won't let 'em....IMO that's why it'll never be the same.
That said I've enjoyed the shows I went to (Albany & Hartford) some great points, some low points, but like others have said that happened with The Good 'ol Greatful Dead sometimes too. I just went to enjoy good times w/ old friends and hear the boys do what they can, seems if I go with a critical attitude it ruins my good time....take what you need and leave the rest...PEACE ON

Kenny, I remember the thunderstorms! Got underneath just in time. That show was the least impressive RatDog show I've seen and after 4-5 AB numbers, I got bored with them. As for this IZOD show I loved it. Yes there were some weaker moments, but at 55 I have them too. It was the 4th show I've been to on the tour and it was the best so far. And it's not only the music is the vibe from all the Deadheads that makes a show. You can still have a great time even if the music doesn't live up to your expectations. Agree with DOC "take what you need and leave the rest." If you think they suck then please stay away, we don't need the negative vibe.
Bill, Bernardsville NJ
I LOVED IT. I TOTALLY LOVE THE DEAD. THEY HAVE IMPROVED WITH AGE. I DIDN'T MISS JERRY AT ALL. I LOVE THOSE GUYS AND THE MUSIC THEY MAKE. I LOVED THE SHOW SO MUCH I CAME BACK THE NEXT NIGHT.
