HOLY COW! my boys were tight last night! i'd heard mixed reviews and was nervous going in, but they were AWESOME. it was my first box of rain. the boys can still rock! cant wait till tonight!!!

Excellent show - very tight and not a lot of endless noodling. Warren was on! Comes a Time, Cold Rain, Sugar Mags and Box - are you kidding me! Loved the 1st set with Playing to start and then back into it to finish the 1st set was nice.
I have only seen last night and the DC show and was much more impressed with last night. Only bitch is that Phil is too far back on the stage and from my seat (302) could not see Jeff.
The lot was insane. Lots of vending and lots of fun. Tonight will be off the hook.
If the boys are able to top last night - I will be surprised!
Have fun everybody!

a stunning opening two songs with the crowd immediately into their vocal range by song #2; the rainbow over the jersey flats was a great omen - the spectrum rocked on shakedown and the devil/playin finish was fresh...warren rocked jack straw-phenomenal sugar magnoli- looselucy came from a xcellnt drums/space however there was a rhythm hicciup on looselucy, hey, the mets were in town..great show, lets go phils and lets go gene hart(HK)

Great show, the band was in top form and very energized, I had a great seat and could see their faces-- they were rockin' and having fun !!! Philly crowd was explosive and danced and sang along the whole night, especially for Shakedown, Jack Straw and Sugar Mag. I've been seeing this band for30 years now and they are still evolving, it is great to see them break out songs like Caution which rocked the house, Phil was in top form.

awesome!!!! sounded great last night. got in during new speedway and it sounded great! shakedown was nice. crowd was fired up for that one. love the lightning bolt hanging over the floor for shakedown. duprees wasnt as great. sounded off during that one. seemed like it wasnt well rehearsed. hard to handle moved!!!! shit was awesome!!! friend was great. second set was good. could have done without warren singing comes a time thought they could have done without that one. warren should sit back and play . his solos were just something that could be left out. he does well singing the pig pen tunes.loved sugar magnolia was first time heard for me and it rocked.tonight is gonna be off the hook!!security was well respected last night and it felt fantastic!!!! it was wild as hell in there and i saw no confrontations with security! they need to do something about slippery floors! samson and delilah tonight baby! gonna knock that old building down!!!!

I heard so many mixed reviews, especially about Warren. I can only go on what I witnessed last night. Just a flat out great show. Very, very,,, VERY tight, Everybody just cranked it way up, and Warren was outstanding, his guitar work would have Jerry smiling and his vocals fit in so nicely. Will they be able to repeat that tonight? Well if they are only 1/2 as good as last night, I still will be one happy dancing bear. The old Spectrum has seen some special shows in the past, and this one put a big smile on my face.

Okay...Warren is doing a nice job, but let me throw out an idea here: Why not replace Warren with Jimmy Herring on guitar and John Kadlecik (lead vocalist for Dark Star Orchestra) on Jerry vocals..?!!?? Both performers are excellent. Discuss amongst yourselves and let me know what you think. Agree with me or attack my idea...I can handle it. I just have to know. Thanks in advance.
Ruddigger VanSant, Worcester, MA
Let Warren stay. Have John play lead and sing...like the 2 guitar setup that they had before. Jimmy Herring was my least favorite and please replace Jeff...the guy is so weak.

CG...Thanks for your comment. I like the two guitar setup, too. But do you think Warren would tolerate John playing lead...?
Ruddigger VanSant, Worcester, MA
Hey Rud, Can they both play lead? I have been taken over the coals with my feelings for Jeff. I believe he is adequate, but just kind of there? I would do anything to get Bruce back.

An excellent, high energy first set. An excellent 2nd set Jack Straw, Aligator>Caution...then what? It was all down hill from there. Loose Lucy out of space? Arrrggggh! No energy by the end of the show and the encore??? Dear god a dreary Box of Rain. The show was OKAY just not that spectacular. I guess for all the 16-25 year olds it was great, but seasoned heads know better.
Mercury, Eastern PA
I loved it, and I will miss the Spectrum. One of the best post-Jerry shows I have attended. So many memories of the venue, it's a shame they will demolish it, a historical place.

To Ruddigger's question about Warren being willing to share the lead parts.......2 years ago at mountain jam Phil and friends played a killer show on Sunday night with Warren and John Scofield sharing lead duties and Warren could be seen throughout the show egging John on to do more soloing.....Warren is a truly selfless performer, I mean he shares lead duties with Derek, although the Allmans music is written for dual leads, The Dead's music is written for a single lead. Gov't Mule is his baby and with that band he runs the show and he can truly take over. Warren is my personal fav for "doing" Jerry, not only is he more than capable of the soloing, he sings and plays with honest emotion and integrity. I've heard some say his style doesn't fit as well as some others, however I like to think that Jerry would appreciate someone placing their own stylings into his songs as an honest interpretation, as opposed to someone just mimicing what Jerry already played. Just my 2 cents.

Back at the Spectrum, last time 1979, Pep and Tosty Rosty make and the games begin, Parking lot was fantastic, had forgotten how cool East Coast pkg lots at shows are!! 1st set starts with a Playin and then the magic really starts with a scorching half step,Warren is On and Bobby has already picked up on this being the Maestro that he is.Speedway Boogie blows Rosty away as he was humming it all week prior to show.Shakedown just rattles the Dancin building and into Dupree, then a perfect version of Hard to Handle with Warren soaring once againDevil to end 1st set was a great choice.WOW. 2nd set Jack Straw and its a beauty, they really got into it,tehn the next mind blowing experience is Loose Lucy out of space, and they almost pulled off perfect, but alas reached for a zone and missed, thats why we all come to these shows Right?Comes a Time just played wonderfully and then Cold Rain done better then I have seen in 32 years, I am still hearing it.A fantastic Sugar and very nice Box of rain, what a Great 1st show in Philly and these guys are having a Blast, can`t wait for tomorrow!!!!Smile,Smile,Smile

Couldn't make the Saturday show which I KNEW was going to be through the roof, but Friday was definitely among the best of the tour. I've been following the tapes closely and they were the tightest tonight than anywhere else on this tour, maybe even the decade. Just wish I could have seen Morning Dew at the Closing of the Spectrum (basically).
About the Warren debates: he has had some low points in this tour, but tonight he was PERFECT. I don't think Jimmy Herring can touch him (though I agree it would be good to help Warren focus on singing on key). But tonight! Warren's vocals and guitar were both DEAD on. I just wish they could get Joan Osborne back to take a few of the Jerry crooners from Warren. She belts like nobody. That Dark Star>China Doll>Dark Star at Bonnaroo!!?!? She blew my mind.
I don't understand people's objection to Jeff Chimenti. Not only might you be the same critical bastards that killed Brent, but I think Jeff holds these fogies together. He makes the early 2009 tour shows listenable! Also, doesn't he have Keith AND Brent's gear?

I'm not sure if they sounded great or if I was just dying to hear them again, or both, but this was my first show with any members of the GD since 1994 and I thought they sounded better at this show than any shows I saw in the 90's. The crowd was super pumped and rocked all night. It was a great confirmation to me that the spirit of the Dead and all they encompass is still alive. To those pessimists out there I think you need to realize that it's a gift just to be able to hear this music live these days. The past is the past and I'm just hoping for another tour.

Amazing show on 5/1! A great send-off to a great venue with great people!
Glad to be one of the lucky 500 to have picked up a 'digital souvenir' from the show!
"What a real good time!"

Still a really nice show after all these years. Terrific Sugar Mag! Ok so it's not like it was back in the day with Garcia but it is indeed a gift to hear the band live. Grateful to have been there and grateful to share this experience with my children who are now old enough to appreciate all that the GD and the culture that surrounds this experience.
