Mammoth. Crystal clear sound. The opening Jam>Here Comes Sunshine>Crazy Fingers seemed to go on forever (ya know, in a good way!) and had the intensity of a second set jam. Absolutely stellar. PS: Could I just ask just one favor? In the future could Mr. "I remember where I was the first time I heard this song and let me tell you an interesting obscure fact about Jerry Garcia" talk about it IN BETWEEN songs and not during them? Please? Just once I'd like to go to a concert without having to listen to a running commentary of the show from the guy standing right in front of me. Be good. Peace.

Really lacked energy from start to finish. I have seen 6 furthur shows, and this was by far the worst. Just being honest
Allen Hill, Charlotte
I have seen many Dead , otherones, Ratdog and Phil shows and this may have been the worst. Half the setlist was lame and the band lacked energy. Too many songs were played slowly.
Paul, Charlotte
what show were you at paul & allen? last night was incredible. lame set? you two wouldn't know beautiful music if it smacked you in the face. the sets are uniquely excellent. how many more times will you see phil on lost-saint? both on caution > new potatot!! China >CR&S, foolish and cosmic to close the first? BE SERIOUS. be grateful.
lacked energy? maybe the crowd (I hear you Jeff) but certainly not the band. they were rockin all night. even when they are mellow (like asheville - still amazing), they jams/song choices and synchronicity bobby & phil have will never stop pleasing us true inspired by their greatness and grateness.
My only gripe is I couldn't hear enough keys - turn Jeff up
see you in hampton!!!

the* jams/song... us truly* inspired...
please excuse me.. the last two nights were verrry long & still a little cloudy.
Also - how many times will you hear phil on come together & maggies? bobby on nobody girl & unbroken/pride (from asheville). stay home, or at least tell your poor attitude to bc I could feel your bad energy last night. Or just enjoy it while we can

Ok.. Seeing as how this is a review of the show, I was just stating my opinion of what I experienced. All these reviews are subjective and vary from person to person. I thought this show was very slow, the jamming never, escalated to any point past the normal. Listen to the Conn. show from December, then compare. Not even in the same ball game. The setlist is great on paper. I am blessed to even see these guys again, especially with the old school songs, but the review is honest and comparitive to other furthur shows. I am glad that for every neg. review like mine, there are many who thought it was the most amazing show they have ever seen. To each his own...
Allen Hill, Charlotte
Hmmm... Phil, I have to say I believe you are missing the point of a review. We all know we are lucky to be getting the gift of Furthur. A low energy show is a low energy show. It happens. I, for one, am curious to know when that happens. Phil is 70, fercrissakes! A crazy setlist doesn't guarantee a great night. I'm really glad you had a great night. With a setlist like the one they played on this night, I'm definitely curious to know how someone like Allen, who has some perspective, felt about it. I have a feeling he has been smacked in the face by some beautiful music, and knew it.

This was indeed an awesome show. Very solid throughout both sets. The only lacking part in the first set was Minglewood Blues, 'cause Bob plays it Ratdog-style, with an extra measure between vocal lines, instead of the traditional snappy GD arrangement. Same deal with Asheville's Loose Lucy. Don't get me wrong it was still rockin', but the extra measure drags it down a bit. Everything else in the first set was great. The harmonies in Here Comes Sunshine really benefit from the back-up singers! Candyman was just superb.
Second set highlights included St. of Circumstance and a fantastic China Doll that rivaled Asheville's Stella Blue. Also Bob really nailed Come Together. He's goofed up this song more than a few times, but this version was perfect. The girls really shined again during New Potato and I always feel lucky to hear Anthem of the Sun material live. Box of Rain was a feel-good encore. Time must have been short 'cause Bob preempted Phil's donor speech saying: "If it wasn't for that there wouldn't be this; so think about it!"
The only truly weak point was Nobody Girl, same for Mag. Mtn. in Asheville. Phil must really like Ryan Adams to include these tunes in the songbook. As far as I'm concerned they have no place in the setlist, especially the second set. i wish they would drop those songs and leave 'em to Ryan.
A note about the venue. This was the best venue of the tour so far. I love Thomas Wolfe (my favorite auditorium) but, the arena in Charlotte was awesome. No searches on the way into the show, frienldy laid-back staff, plenty of tickets, etc. The lot had a nice big shakedown, tons of vending and other transactions, and sweet fireworks after the show.
The best aspect was that despite the fact that floor seating was reserved, the rows of chairs only covered half the floor. The whole back half of the floor was wide open and we took full advantage of the spacious area and danced like crazy! No staff bothered people about aisles or tickets once they were on the floor and stubbing people down was really easy. Anyone who wanted to be on the floor was there. In Asheville people were dancing like crazy in front of the stage with Phil getting a kick out of it during Hell in a Bucket; But in Charlotte the wild dancing was in the back of the floor. However, that seemed to be the only wild place. Much of the audience was really tame and after seeing the other shows I was so suprised to see so few people smoking during the show. The roar of the crowd wasn't as loud as ATL or AVL. A few adventerous souls did manage to climb up the catwalk and circle the arena at the very top during China Doll before the cops rounded them up! That was a wild sight indeed.
This band is so much damn fun I think I'll have to cruise up to VA for another round this weekend!

It has been 6 or 7 months since a GD related event for me. Anticipation was high, and as usual, these guys did not disappoint.
Lights went down and our friends ( a new lineup of them) took the stage.
The customary opening jam that eventually gave way to hints of HCS was well developed, insightful, and full of controlled energy.... not boredom as a previous reviewer has commented. These are clearly the elder statesmen of rock n roll and they can certainly lay down a groove. If any of you can go anywhere else and find anything that sounds any better, then please vacate the good seats and let a deadhead have em'.
So HCS, a true commentary on our state of the weather locally, was beautifully expressed in Grateful Dead fashion.
Crazy Fingers was such a wonderful surprise that I nearly had to excuse myself to the bathroom. It was played with consistent Philbombs dropped all over the place (was that good enough for this show's detractors?)
Sailor-Saint was actually pretty easy to predict coming out of the set 2 opening jam which was most lovely and expansive. This as well played. Later in the set came the Beatles Come Together which was rollicking and although not a choice of mine for a song list, reflected how unimportant a song actually is in comparison with the fashion in which it is played. That is what these guys are all about folks.... no nostalgia here. Wish I could see more of this tour, but that may not happen. Happy 40th B' day to the wonderful lady who sat next to me and danced with me all night. I may never see you again, but if I do, I will certainly recognize you. God bless all.

Hampton is going to be the bomb. They have not played much from the 10/9/89 show. Who knows????

Hey now, When you're in Utica could a rock a tune out for Jesse Wood. He got killed in a bad deal and he's always been one of your biggest fans. He will be missed by people there. You don't have to say or nothing. The cops have lost a good one there too and the mourning goes on for many. So shine that love light on Mohawk Valley and help heal 'em up. Utica is making a come back and needs some celebrating for sure. Good house keeping and loads of good love for your concert there. God Bless New York and the deadheads. Thanks.

This was hands down one of the worst concerts I have ever attended. I was on the 3rd row directly in front of Bobby. He looked very sad, he never cracked a smile or showed any energy. The coliseum had to be no warmer than 50 degrees inside and on top of that it was not half full. The reason there were no seats in the back was becuase they could not sell them and it would have looked embarrassing to have all of those empty seats on the floor. The setlist was weak to say the least and then played with no enthusiasm. Everything sounded like the album version with NO jam. You could not hear the drums or keyboards. But you could hear plenty bass when you were suppose to hear guitar. John may be good, but he is not allowed to play hard.
I know I will get ripped by people that thought this was a great show. My question is what are you comparing this to? I have seen 140 dead shows and probably 50 various other ones, ratdog, dead, etc.. and all were so much better than this show. Compared to the Dead last Spring this is an emarrassment, and from the looks of Bobby's lack of emotion on stage he must feel the same way. Will someone please explain to me why Phil and Bobby's wives insisted on this line-up. My understanding is the two of them are making most of the calls. God help us. Please bring back the DEAD.
Peace

Hey ya'll I'm listening to this show right now from Archive and it sounds great. I don't know what some of the reviewers are referring to when they say the band lacked energy. Some of the songs are best played slow like the opener and maybe some prefer a peppy opener but I've always liked this Here comes sunshine as an opener - after-all the Dead do come to cold places like Charlotte of late, like a warm ray of sunshine. John K. is super on lead guitar and unlike the NC favorite son Warren Haynes this guy grew up playing Grateful Dead and always dreamed of this moment. Warren was just moonlighting last year. This guy is no Jerry stand in he is good and I mean really good. He has a nice voice and has the imagination to play lead guitar. Give this show a second listen and you'll be pleasantly surprised. Heck I'm looking forward to listening to it for years to come. See you all on tour.

Reading all these reviews makes me wonder if some of you were really there...Maybe to high to make a good judgement of the show. From where I sat I could hear all the instruments and vocals, and it sounded excellant. John K is what the band needed... the presence of a lead guitar to take control in the Dead tradition not like the southern rock sound of Hayes and Herring of past years. As for the energy, I've been to many shows that were more energenic and many that were worse...They are what you make of them. Parts of the second set I just sat back closed my eyes and let the music take over, other parts I was up and flowing with the music...Every show will not have you up the entire night...never have...never will....there's always that spot where you can just close your eyes and float with the music...That's the its always been....even back in the old days...As for the set list, they can't play every song you like...there's always a few songs that aren't my favorites...but it doesn't make it a bad show...As for what Mike said "give the show a second listen"and the decide. I enjoyed it.

I wanted to wait to get home and listen to this show before posting. This was my 3rd show in as many nights and I was really tired (and psychedelically sober) so the show seemed slow. The archive.org recording affirms that it was a mellow show. No complaints.

decent show and a good time..i've definitely seen better AND worse. Loved Foolish Heart and Lost sailor>saint. Could have done wo maggie's farm(waaay too slow!) Basically though, we were ALL smiles and the vibe in our area was very good. can't wait to see-em again!

Rick from MB. I loved the foolish heart - Cosmic Charlie. I work in MB - hit me up at wwt_123@yahoo.com and I will buy a beer next week.

All these bad reviews.. and on such a good nite. I think there is a trend here... namely that people who once liked the Greatful Dead are beginning to tire of them. The sound quality was definitely there on this nite. However, different locations within the arena would probably have featured certain instruments more than others. I could hear just fine and I was up in the mezz section to the extreme right of the stage. Chimenti was remarkably clear and impressive and he was clear across the arena to the far end of the stage from my perspective.
Who cares if Bob was smiling or not. Does anybody really buy a ticket to see Bob Weir smile. So, then stay home and I'll send you some teletubbie videos... or do you prefer Barney... he smiles a lot. Bob Weir has never been particularly known for his demonstrative facial features (except when he misses a chord or something) and I think that a lack of facial expression can usually be attributed to the fact that he is engrossed in what is doing. The guy is at work for Pete's sake. I hope none of this show's critics will be dissuaded from seeing this band again. Maybe you all will like the next show better.

Set 1: Not too much to say except for a nice foolish/cosmic charlie...very low key first set.
The second set started with a chill sailor and better saint. Doin that rag gained some momentum at the end, but nothing crazy. This night...everything was played so slow. Come together was ok. The Caution was totally hot, but lost some steam at the end. New Potato was mellow, like the whole show.
By far the least impressive show of the tour.
The Rankings:
1) Atlanta
2) Miami
3) Orlando
4) Asheville
5) Charlotte
