Hippy Freak, In the Sunshine
Powerful show, expectations blown away, high energy from the band all night. 1st set highlights, nice tight Picassso opener, sweet Dupree's followed by my hightlight of the set Friend and Mama Tried. Both songs the band showcased their talents and proved that this incarnation of the band has a little something extra special. The band listens, and plays off each other with a swagger and pushes hard. Also JK and JC in pair up nicely.Rest of the 1s remained hot finishing off with Passenger. Second set picked the energy up where it left off from the 1st. Scarlet-Fire was both rockin and nicely jammed out w/ Russo and Lane adding power. Bucket had extra effort w/ background vocals adding nice touch. They also proved why they are a nice addition to the band which adds flexibility to the bands songbook, on the following Rueben and Cherise. An eastern flavored Days ensued by another night's highlight China-Rider. Rider had extra effort and proved that the tank ain't empty yet for these guys. One almost has the feeling that this band might be together for a while, and that it has summoned something special. Check it out if you get the chance.

I agree - the Picasso Moon was excellent and a nice surprise as was Black Throated Wind. A smoking Passenger was a great way to end the first set. Also enjoyed the Hell in a Bucket - W LA Fadeaway **In The Dark** combo. It did seem about a 1/2 an hour shorter than either CO show would be the only downer. Can't wait for my last stop - San Francisco. See you there!

Passenger, Scarlet>Fire, China>Rider were clear highlights. Looking at other recent set lists (Chicago and Colorado) made me long for tried and true powerhouse tunes a la St. Stephen, Other One, 11, Dark Star, and Help>Slip>Franklin's. It seemed like they took a break as soon as things started really rocking (Passenger and China>Rider). I agree that this show seemed quite short. In spite of it all, GD community is alive and thriving. Happy 70th Phil.

As a longtime Head, this was my first time seeing Further and I was really impressed. There were a few flubs but overall the band has lots of punch and can rock out or jam out just about every song - interesting to see where they do it sometimes. Joe Russo is a really good drummer and has some of that Billy jazzy feel of '73 or '74 which is cool. Jay's percussion is great, but also miss seeing him behind the kit.

Bob was obviously in the 80's mood, as he played that pink guitar the entire night and only reached for the Gibson for the encore. I'm only getting warmed up to JK playing the Jerry role, singing mainly. His guitar work is pretty good and tasty. The whole show was very good, had its moments for sure with a great BTW, rockin' Passenger to close the 1st set. Scarlet>Fire to open the 2nd set was a great nod to the history of 6/12/80 and the Mt St Helens night, which several folks around me were witness to. Plus Bill Walton was in the crowd at this point, dancin' and smiling and having a great time!! Hell in a Bucket was solid, with Bob coming back after the seemingly ending with some vocal jams leading the boys back into another build up to a 2nd rockin' ending. I think Bob singing West LA Fadeway is great - they found a nice snakey groove to the tune. The China>Rider to close was one of the best versions I've seen or heard - really epic. Nice double encore and the band ended with hugs all around to end the tour. Phil mentioned that they would "definately be back" so it seems Further is here to stay for a bit.

My only criticisms - not a big fan of Built To Last, Peaceful Valley or Days Between. Those tunes brought the energy down too much. The "girls" need to find their place. Its obvious they don't quite know what to do with themselves when the band jams, but I like their vocals and they round out the vocal sound a lot.

I think one of the best things Further has going is the set lists - its so varied, they play stuff from all over the years including JGB stuff, they mix up it, can jam out just about any tune - quite an extensive list to choose from. Memorial Coliseum was pretty relaxed, but would love to see them at a smaller Portland venue next time around!

Portland Memorial proved to be a good venue for Furthur. The Rose Garden next door was hosting Monday Night Raw pro wrestling, whose fans proved to be an interesting contrast to the heads milling around. The pranksters bus was outside as well, and it was great to see all the beautiful artwork on that rolling piece of history.
As for the show - A top-notch first set! Everything was letter perfect and featured inspired playing from all members of the band. It seems like this lineup has matured quite a bit in the five weeks that they've been on the road in 2010. Great first set, look for it on livedownloads.com or archive.org.
Second set had a nice Scarlet>Fire opener, interesting Hell in a Bucket, a growling West LA fadeaway and a powerful Ruben and Cherise. The jam between West LA and Ruben had a cool wandering feel that reminded me of a Playing in the Band jam. This settled into Days Between, which was good, only minor lyric flubs from Weir. After Days we got another short liquid jam into a bopping China Cat Sunflower. The interlude jam from China to Rider was good, but not too exploratory. Rider featured some really high energy - for the last jam, Jeff had a fantastic run and built up some serious tension for John K to blow the roof off the coliseum, until....equipment problems! Ugh! Just at his cue to "hit it" his guitar stopped working! Vamp for a few bars...guitar change...then WHAM! John delivered the goods in a very serious way. Hot!

The Knocking encore was kind of a downer, for me, just slow and didn't really get off the ground, but a quick shift to Touch of Grey and they shut down the show with a lot of gusto.

Can't wait for another Portland show with Furthur, a two-night run in October would be quite nice.

Just got home from the Monday Show.
I thought the set list was very good some highs and lows but put together well.
JOHN did well on the strings compared to the people they have had on the DEAD shows the last few years. I hope he is with this line up for awhile.
Like I always say the BEST DEAD show is always the next ONE. Thanks for keeping the music alive.

I've been checking the Archive for a recording of this show. Anyone care to upload it? I would love to hear the BTW. Saw the Cornell show last month and have tix to Brooklyin in June.
