All I can say is...EPIC!...from begining to end...longest show I've ever been too(ended @ 2:15)...great parade and what a nice way to wish Phil a very happy bd!!
Roger B, San Fran
very amazing show! everyone was on top of everything! the vibes were awesome, the people were smiling, singing and romancing! phil is looking better than ever and playing like he was 20! everything was a highlight, grate combination of guests and grate connection! joe and molo was an amazing mix! chris robinson has a grate voce and did lots of singing, which gave it a good kick and jay and moliz was fantastic, kinda hard to listen to bobby, maybe because there were 4 guitar most of the time...? or maybe it was positioning?
ripple really got the crowd going, folowed by some very nice acoustic tunes, mountains is always a treat to listen as well peggy-o and a beautiful attics to close the set!
Scarlet was a treat, followed by some good old dead, and with a grate viola sandwich, and that sugaree was as sweet as sugar!
the 3rd set was funny, i think it was the shortest set in the history of music, funny, not fade away begun, the foalters started coming out, very artistic and fun, and right as the lyrics were going to begin the happy birthday song begun instead balloons fell and not fade way started again, and then then phil announced they were going on a short brake! haha it was funny and a bit confusing! but well worth it cause they came out with the fire on for the "4th"!! the playing in the band was awesome, as well as the rest of the set, but for me the highlight was that awesome cream puff war with that flawless transition into franklins!! grate way to close the set!
and a powerful johnny b to end the night!
over all it was a grate night, it very fun to see the all the band just having a blast and enjoying the night with all of us! thanks for all this magnificent music, vibes, smiles and "i say thank you... for a real good time!!"

In review of the music and the majic of each note. This was something I found along my way of the shows. Nothing worth while is easy but I'm so glad I made it to the shows I did get to go to. sniff sniff, sniff. When you go to show and interact with the kind people, love abounds everywhere and it's delightful to share such joy with each other. There are thoes who do not get this side of a show and will not understand what I'm sayin. But I want to say it as a review of what a show is when there's loving involved. I'm going to go out there on you now. I think we have a human feature just like the animals in our noses. A really forgotten human trait. some people smell so good to us, think of who you like the smell of. I love to smell my kid, I could pick him out of thousand if I were blind folded. I am of extreme senses and
I like adventure. After a show I get to sniff myself and I like it. I smell around my shoulders and find all thoes beautiful hugs I got along the way. I smell my shirt and jacket and my kind hair. I smell many a man scent and it's a feast of the senses. Much delight is found in touch of cloth to my nose, yummy. A dash of perfume here and there from hugging my sisters and oh it 's so sweet. Awesome are my sisters and my brothers smells on me. I smell roses from the rose lady and the sweetness remeinds me of the music we just bathed in. I find only but one smell I wished not to remember, unfortunately it goes like that. I smell my armpits and love it as it reminds me of the rocking beats that I danced to and that made my pores open wide and then it made me rain. And I rained and rained, rained some more and knew I found the place I was looking for. Dancing is the grove of of of this jamming, funky, wailing, jazzy, traditional, new-age, folk, blues rock and roll band! Must be a family thang, love you sweaty dead heads hippies, and they kept on dancing. Thanks be to God: milk, honey, music and sweat. Tickets are priceless once again, let the good times roll.

Ann B, beautiful sense oriented way to describe your joy, never considered being with our family that way, I'm more cerebral, contemplative, but you're onto it and I'll pay attention to the nose next time, smell you there!

It is worth mentioning the Two Souls in Communion, that song (plus a few other songs) prompted a good friend of mine to observe "Pigpen was in the room tonight".
Also, during Creampuff War, we were transported back in time to some 1966 Go-Go club as two white booted, miniskirt wearing grils joined the band doing period appropriate energetic Go-Go dancing!

Bruce,
I was thinking the same thing when I saw Two Souls in Communion in the set list...WOW! When was the last time that one was dusted off??? Sure wish I could have been there! I was certainly tempted after the Denver shows (which were awesome!) but figured tickets would be near impossible to come by. I hope they release it on CD...for those of us who couldn't attend.
Anyway, many happy returns to Phil!!! He is truly amazing!

I was there mr. Harris and it was a marathon. Something for everyone.. Great acoustic set and vocals froim the guests. Great visuals from the floats and light show. Great improv and jamming in the las set that ended at 2 am. I left exhausted and satisfied.
Cfuller, Wellsville, ny
Yes very epic show, very long (even longer than New Years) and an unreal set list. Everyone sounded grate everyone looked good especially Phil, buuut the only downer was that John K did not sing lead on any of the songs last night. None.. huh?? What's up with that? I've seen Bobby hit the stage 13 times in the last 10 months (5x The Dead, 2x Ratdog, 6x Furthur) and to me the most magical part of those 13 shows has been Furthur, maybe not necessarily the "best" line-up but certainly the most magical. Why?? Well it has to be John K. So I was actually bummed that he didn't sing as cool as it was to see Jackie and Chris, that specific Furthur magic that I have experienced the last 5 Furthur shows was absent in SF. Still glad I was there but it was an awful long drive to not here my boy sing! Happy Birthday Phil.
Denver Man, Colorado
Hey Chris that was the best- you helping making Phil's 70th so great. When you broke out Hard to Handle all thoes years ago, I was so freaking happy to hear you sing it. I rocked out with that tune 100's of times on the radio and with my Black Crows tape. I would call and request it all the time. I have always loved the Black Crows and have seen you guys a few times. Last night's preformance was outstanding. And how about? call her outttt, next time man. You freakin rock.
Hippy Freak, Lighting a candle
Look like ann B fromSan Fran was hitting the DIETHYLAMIDE !!!!!!!!! I must have missed those doses that night!
BillyO, Trenton
Having just arrived back in BC from the show and having time to listen to the first set, I’m going out on a limb in saying this is perhaps the most important and significant show of the last 35 years of the Grateful Dead family. This is the Last Waltz, the Rainbow concert, the Live Aid of the Dead’s sphere of influence, but even better in that it was a celebration of 40 years of music and not a retirement event, a concert that looked as much to the future as the past with three generations of players taking the stage at once.
The guitar work, mandolin, vocals, and arrangements of the first set make it the most significant of any of the Dead’s acoustic sets. The Ripple opening set the tone for the entire evening. Brokedown Palace in the middle of the first set, Bobby’s guitar arrangement on Dylan’s Hard Rain’s Gonna Fall, John’s leads on Lazy River Road and an incredible organ arrangement for Mountains of the Moon made for some incredible moments in the Dead’s musical history. During Attics with its 6 part harmonies you didn't need any extra help to see the goose bumps grow on the Civic Center walls. This set was definitely about love, honoring the past and the roots of our music.
If the first set was about retrospective, the second set was about the Dead’s soul. Hands down the best ever New Speedway Boggie, coming out of a best ever Easy Wind. Working Man’s dead for a working man’s audience. When they broke into Viola Lee the entire audience knew the possibilities were endless. High Time and the jam afterwards were out of this world, but the Hard to Handle was perhaps the highlight of the night. Chris put his guitar down and put his soul into this one. Slowing this one down during the jam, with John and Jackie trading licks and Chris just belting it out, you could feel Pigpen’s spirit in the room.
No doubt I wasn’t alone thinking the Viola reprise was the set closer but then they broke into Like a Rolling Stone. This was the set’s gift to the audience. As Bobby walked up to the mike the expression on his face was priceless, something that you just had to be there for. He threw his hands in the air in frustration as he had forgotten to put the capo on his guitar. This showed me how much the tune meant to Bobby and had me thinking about how much work they must have put into rehearsing for this set. Once underway, Rolling Stone was a gem. John had some great guitar arrangements and his lead on this tune was as tasteful as they come….. and then they broke into Sugaree. It seemed the second set would last all night long. Sugaree had some incredible keys by Jeff and amazing guitar solos to follow, one crescendo after another.
Set 3.1 was amazing. Everyone was out on the stage for this one, family crew friends and band and the focus wasn’t on the band but on the amazing parade, and true family, us the audience. Balloons, lights and a very crafty surprise for Phil when the cake float made it into the center of the room and the band just stopped playing and starting singing happy birthday! Phil looked moved.
After a short set break, the crew was handing out birthday cake to the folks in the front of the floor, the band had broken into the Playing and the energy turned from 60’s and 70’s Pigpen, to deeper places in the universe not yet explored yet. Playing in the Band into St. Stephen. This was up there with Playing into Dark Star at the Warlocks show. What a transition and the Stephen jam with four guitars had to be the best ever played, again wave after wave of energy.
Keeping things on the top floor, the Other One was a great following out of St Stephen, this time up there with Mac Court in 78. Following the second verse they just never stopped jamming it and they segue into an amazing space, then jam, then orchestration that brought us from the 60’s to 2010 with a great rave energy and vibe that transcended generations and genres.
Unbroken Chain with Jackie on Keys and just Bobby and John on guitars was the highlight of the marathon, 15 minutes of poetic guitar playing. Comes a Time just came out of nowhere and featured some of John’s most melodic playing of the night. This on top of a High Time, Brokedown, Attics and Ripple!
Just before Cream Puff war I could see the Go Go Dancers on the side of the stage. What was going on? What a great present for someone turning 70! The energy of their run onto the stage, their dancing and Chris belting out Cream Puff war this was clearly the sprint at the end of the marathon. The transition into Franklins left us with one very fast paced Franklin’s and Jackie nailed an amazing solo at the very end.
Johnny B Goode was a great choice for a show with five of the finest guitar players a Dead Head could hope to see (four guitars one bass guitar).
I think looking back the its sad to think it’s been 15 years without Jerry’s playing in the band, but then again during the Jerry years they always held back on the break out shows. Perhaps it’s that there is just not much time left, or perhaps the generosity of the band’s hearts has just grown that much larger with age. Whatever the case, it’s good to know the music never stops. This was a historic moment in time. Three generations of musicians celebrating some of the best music ever written, giving to charity, honoring their friends no longer with us and all the while putting on the best birthday party ever. Thank you!

Well, well, well. 3 sets, or was that 4 including the birthday, not fade away at sometime after midnight. What a great show. The acoustic 1st set was all I needed to hear, and JK did sing Lazy River Road, did he not? CR added a strong vocal vibe to the mix and pigpen surely was in the house. Everybody was smiling and having a good time all night and we were wondering if they would set out cake for everyone on the way out (although at a little past 2am breakfast may have been in order.) Hiked in Muir woods in the pouring rain prior to the show but all the dancing dried me off before the start of set 2. A long strange trip from PHL to SFO on thursday, but would do it tomorrow if given the chance. Peace
St Stepen 11, Bucks County PA
James that is a bold statement. I would suggest that perhaps the first show back in 76 or maybe the first show after the coma were slightly more important, or at least significant. After all, the band WITH Jerry were actually playing again after some doubt. And I suggest listening to the Speedway breakout 91 Oakland, after 21 year hiatus. It does, after all, have Jerry playing the lead. But it's great that the music survives for everyone to enjoy in their own special way.

Wow, what a night!! 1st get my ticket @SD airport so I know I am in!! Get backstage and run into the birthday boy himself, who allows me to hang a little, I even kissed Phil on his cheek, my wife is soo jealous.Perfect.1st set acoustic, I have had time to listen to the cds and realize what I knew that night, what a very special night we all were having, the most thoughtful musicians ever!!
