Reviews
by far the sickest post-GD show I've seen!!!
Dark Star DEFINITELY crashed in Brooklyn tonight!
In the shadows of the moon, the boys were in TOP form at Coney Island tonight, and made from the start expressed their joy for being in Brooklyn ("PHINALLY" as Phil so eloquently put it!)
Shakedown, Hight Time, BT Wind and St. Stephen were also as good as any music they've played since Jerry died. Seriously. What a night!

Great set list, the playing had its ups and downs though. Maybe it was just the venue....a dusty, metallic baseball field that was covered by a plastic tarp. No security presence at all. Watched a great cover band at a little bar right outside the venue for about 3 hours before going in, they were hot and really got the day off to a great start. It's great to see Phil and Bob up there smiling, and they will pick up steam as the tour goes on.

Looks like a great show! I hope tonight is as good or better!

Was I the only one who felt like I was at a Bob Weir tribute? Why bother adding John to the bad if you are not going to let him sing. Terrapin, ShKedown, BTW were great but show felt one dimensional. John should sing Loose Lucy, Brokedown, St Stephen....anyway, the Bobby Songs were great (BTW, Throwing Stones, Playin, Jack Straw) but I felt like just one or two Jerry tunes sung by John would have made all the difference.
David, Harrison, NY
Show was alright, but nothing to write home about. Not enough upbeat tunes, and get rid of the all those backround singers. I agree, Bobby should sing the Bobby tunes, and John should sing the Jerry tunes. This show could have been so much better!

Soooooo tired of all the Bobby bashers. He sang great. Shakedown caution St Stephen eleven isn't upbeat enough for you? Makes you sound quite unknowledgeable on grateful dead. John sang enough. High time. China cat. Shakedown. Terrapin. Show was solid. Band.is very tight right now. Keep singing Bobby. Bobby haters go see DSO!

What a terrible night. It started with eating at Nathans on the board walk. They tasted good at the time, so I had 4 of them. They're fries were so delish I had 2 orders. Then the funnel cakes..... must have had 5 of them. Anyhow, I go into the show, and I cannot stop farting. You rude New Yorkers had to make a mockery at the show, when all I wanted to do was dance in my overalls. But the farts... whew, it was one after another. Five songs in, it happened.... a warm fart that ran down my leg. There I am in the middle of a baseball field with a hershey squirt with no bathroom in site. I asked the girl next to me with the Loius Vitton bag if she had a napkin in their so I could wipe the shit running down my leg. She verbally abused me by calling my a dirty shit-kicking hillbilly and that my farts were so bad she puked in her own mouth during chinacat. Well she didn't give me the napkin.
There was no saving that night. I didn't stop farting until encores. The shit had dried on my leg, and I didn't enjoy the show. Tonight I'm staying far away from Nathans before I go into the show. I'm sticking to White Castle. I sure can eat a lot of those little burgers! See you on tour!

The top bits overshadowed the gripes - a nice show.
The set openers were both played very well and got the crowd jumpin'. Black-Throated was tight as well. Loose Lucy was a perfect set 1 call - nice, long and bluesy - just like the 90's tempo. They flubbed the middle of the Saturday Night but it still had energy.
The Shakedown was worth repeating. Unlike at Radio City, where I recall looking down at a roomful of still skeletons, the bones were shakin' all over the field. Caution, while not my favorite, was played well enough.
The Jack Straw was as good a tune as they have in the repertoire, save the endless solo by Jeff. He really needs to cut them 2-3 bars earlier - it would add so much more punch to the guitar lead launch. John seems to be sitting and witing for him to finish pounding on the chords.
That's where the night peaked. Although the Dark Star> Stephen > Eleven was done well, some numbers are sacred to me. Tough to imagine anyone is really on a mind-bending experience during Furthur's Dark Stars - they lack true exploration and resemble bland jazz.
Although the Terrapin addendum was interesting to hear live, I would not be looking forward to hearing it at another show. No dance-able material.. you know you're in for 25 minutes of predictible, written music when you hear the opening chords.
Overall, much more good than bad. The band has improved enormously since I saw them at Hammerstein in December. As always, any show (even a mediocre one) is played with house money at this point. I'm enjoying the run while it lasts.

I just want to say that Bubba's review had Bridget and I in laughing so hard we could hardly move. I will make sure to look for you on tour and I will bring some wet naps just in case.
I can't wait to hear the full show.

So happy Weir bought back BTW, amazing ending into Phil tune which wasn't bad, sounded similiar to Rock-n-Roll blues from his solo record. Thought High Time broke the upbeat momentum. Other first set highlight was Throwing Stones, heard teases of it and Althea in soundcheck. Second set Caution was great rhythm by Bobby. Dark Star seques lost me a bit but ended to the St. Stephen opening chords which revived the crowded. Thought Terrapin was solid but odd way to end the show. Brokedown was mellow, could we have gotten a Ripple? Instead fireworks. Nice venue, sticky weather, and Buba, my sympathies are with you brother.

What a weekend!! They just keep getting better and better each time around. Great times with great friends. Excellent venue - with the exception of the $35 parking fee. Still not sure how they got away with charging almost more to park than the cost of the ticket.
John, Malverne, N.Y.
Band keeps getting better each go-round. Saturday's show was better in my opinion, but Sunday had a lot of crowd-pleasers. Caution was hot, liked the full Terrapin suite - a few weak spots, but it was great to hear the opening notes of "At a Siding" (not to mention the Blues For Allah soundcheck the next day). Terrapin was great in front of the Phil-side big screen, with clouds covering up the full moon. The jamming was tight, and Bob's vocals were the best I've heard since Furthur got going. The setting was naturally exciting, interesting to see the concert-goers and beach-goers checking out their respective scenes on Saturday. Only gripes were the parking prices ($15 for beach, $35 for concert - was supposed to be $20), and the schizophrenic division between the field (Bud Light + port-a-johns) vs. the bleachers (Magic Hat + bathrooms), which was rigidly enforced by most of the guards. We ended up in the bleachers on Sunday so friends could be on the field, and I ended up drinking a little too much Magic Hat, so my memory is a little blurrier....

Traffic was terrible getting in, so I started off on a bad note. I met up with an old college friend and things got better quick. My brother arrived and things were all right, all right, all right. We danced to our seats during China Cat. Really enjoyed Bobby in BTW, he was singing from deep down inside. I respected the Muli Guli (don’t know it well enough to comment). High Time – nice. Loose Lucy – excellent. Throwing Stones – made me think too much about the mess in the Gulf of Mexico, but well played. With the moon so prominent, I thought we might get a Standing on the Moon (which would have reduced me to tears). OMSN – glad they got it over with in the 1st set; enjoyable.
I called the Shakedown for 2nd set opener and was very pleased (plenty of Poke Around). Enjoyed hearing Caution re-interpreted with modern sound. Jack Straw was one of the highlights of the whole night. I heard teases of Dark Star all through the second set so the Playin’ was in the way of what I really wanted to hear (Joey called that one). The rest of the show was magical! DS>Steven>11>Terrapin Suite was as good on paper as it was to the ear for me. The Brokedown Palace encore was perfect (and called by my brother).
A super fantastic night. Hot and humid (even felt a few raindrops during High Time “come in when it’s raining”). People were great. Plenty of singing, clapping, and dancing which always makes me happy! Fireworks to close out the night, too. Ha ha

What a scene....The Cyclone and Ferris Wheel with all their lights to the left, the moon ducking in and out of the clouds on cue to the right and the boys right between...this was one of the best venues in recent memory. The 2nd set was one continuous funky and groovy jam...the boys found the pocket and seemed to stay in it from Shakedown all the way through Terrapin...Vocals on Brokedown were perfect...Thanks for a real good time and see you in Philly and Nokia....
p.s. not sure if anyone else took a stroll over towards the amusement park afterwards but WOW!!! There was some serious groovin and dancin going on to a whole other beat...very cool but I don't think they were digging us trying to get down in our tie dyes, big smiles and eyes bugging out!

I was havin' a good time til that song Muli Guli started and I decided it was time to get a beer...it took me til halfway through throwing stones before I had my beer and was back to my spot...unbelievably difficult to get beers at that place...anyway, there were some great moments such as a smokin china>rider and a really great shakedown...although i must admit i'm getting a little tired of the "shake it down shake it down now" part...jack straw was also formidable...when they went back into dark star after the eleven...the jam started hurting my ears...the keys were too loud and as had happened a few other times in the night a little off with what every one else was doing...then the sax came out and it was time for me to go...it was nice hearing terrapin echo off the buildings as i walked back to the car...

1st swing to NJ and Sea Bright,Long Branch and then Sunken City,AKA Middletown and then Pep and I off to Coney Island, great choce of opener with China/Rider to start the evening and then BTW, one of Bobbys better versions, High time was very nice in the hot humid east coast weather, had forgotten why I moved west 21 years ago, BAM Loose Lucy,Throwin Stones and saturday night and the joint was buzzing cause this felt like one of those amazing shows.Shakedown,Caution,a tripping version into a Freakin great Jack Straw-Jeff was smokin on this song and second set was on its way to some extremly nice places if you are a deadhead.Playin>Dark Star>St Freakin Stephen into a smokin Eleven back into Dark Star, WOW. Then a fully played Terrapin, 33 years and this was my 1st full version, Freakin Awesome!!! Very nicely done Brokedown and fireworks, I know everyone has a take on the show, but the boys really busted a beauty out on this night @ a very cool and friendly venue, NY Cops are the best. Looking forward to one more night!!! Smile Smile Smile
Blanch, San Diego
Are my wife and I the only ones who noticed the bands use of the Parachute Jumps red lights blinking in time with the music Sat. night. I thought it was a coincidence until Sun. night. No blinking red lights just a single airplane beacon light. For the record, I felt Sat. was high energy all the way through while Sun had great openings of both sets but the energy seemed to fade even with awesome set list.
GratefulRed, NYC
I agree with Blanch, S.D. Sat night had more energy. Phil had to give less direction and just wailed on the bass also a louder, better mix than Sunday. I too loved the venue and hope the boys play there again. I also give big props to NY's Finest for being so cool. Very cool all around except for the parking and restroom situations.
