This was as close to the good old days as it is ever going to get. If you havent seen FURTHUR yet, get there asap. With that being said lets get on with the show. You couldnt ask for a better day 85 and sunny. Parking was a bit of a bummer but what do you expect for a place with 1 or 2 enterences. The parking lot was a good a time as Ive ever had. Great mix of all ages. Its very cool to see young and old all groovin together. The venue was one of the best, we walked right up front and we were 3 people back from the rail in front of Bobby. Meet some cool people around us and we all just stayed right where we were and danced the night away with plenty of room. If any of you guys see this I was the guy with the ponytail with my son. I dont think Ive ever seen a first set like this one before. I think the boy doubled up on there vitamins and rocked the shit out of the first set. There were some repeats from Rochester but who cares. If they are going to play like this I wouldnt care if they played the same song all night long. Golden road was a great opener and even better going into Born crosseyed. The Allman Brothers bits and pieces were very cool. Alligator was far out. It was nice to see John having a lot of fun and a bit more loose. I dont think Phil stopped smiling the whole show. Which made me have an even better time knowing he was groovin like he was. The second set started off a little odd. Never in a million years would I have guessed Sage and Spirit as a 2nd set opener. I havent heard Seven hills of gold before so I really dont know what to say about it. Ive been hoping for a Magnolia mountian and I finally got one, now I just need an Unbroken Chain and I can die easy. My son was jones-in for a Terripin, needless to say he got what he wished for. After it was all said and done I would say 10 out of 10. Im just glad we all still have the chance to see and hear the music we all know and love still being made just for us. I have to add that Jeff is doing a killer job on the bench. He dosnt get much mention, but he deserves it. I dont think they could have found a better keyboard player then him. Cant wait for Art park in a few days. Hope to see you there. Look for the steel your face flag and you will find one happy deadhead.

I had mighty high expectations after seeing the boys in Rochester a week earlier. The best tour opener I’ve ever witnessed. They became even higher when we finally got to parking lot and enjoyed a few hours of fun in the sun. The lot was a great scene, no hassles, but TO THE JACKHOLES WHO BRING THEIR INTACT PITBULLS TO SHAKEDOWN STREET, GET A LIFE. THAT'S TOTALLY IRRESPONSIBLE!! FOR YOUR DOG, FOR HUMANS, AND FOR THE OTHER DOG THAT WAS CHEWED UP BY THE PIT. SHAME ON YOU!!
Anyway, despite only one long, narrow entrance/exit, Gelston Castle is a stunning venue. A long sweeping hill, probably 5-7 acres of room to groove (plus all the area at the top of the hill), stage at bottom of course, with gorgeous views looking north by northwest -the lovely rolling hills of the Mohawk River Valley. SUPERB. AWESOME. And easy beer, easy portos, easy wind. Not quite the natural amphitheater that is Highland Bowl, but pretty durned nice just the same. BIG!!
The night was wonderful: Clear sky, Venus setting slowly - chasing the sun to come up behind it again. Perfect temp, the crowd excited but not obnoxious. A very nice mix of young & old. Expectations high. We were right next to soundboard with lots of space and it wasn’t hard to traipse closer now and then.
They NAILED Golden Road opener spot on. It just cooked. Expectations met? Maybe. Born Cross-eyed was good, John carried Alligator when Phil and Bobby started to squash it, and the rest of the show went the same way. John and Jeff hoisted Phil and Bobby time and again, and thank God for that. The two elders could have easily steered the show towards terh senior center if not for John and Jeff. I don’t mind Bobby forgetting words here and there, but he has the potential to keep things TOO SLOW when they should be cooking. Thankfully John and Jeff are fully integrated and given plenty of leverage now, wasn’t always the case. So the younger boys, especially John, would give a jolt to slow burners to save the song, but the show still seemed disjointed, a bit bi-polar. Truckin was so-so, Feelin Alright NPC Viola Lee repeated too close to Rochester and not nearly as good as in Rochester. Jill Lesh and the road manager are doing setlists for the boys and they need to pay more attention to geography!!
Second set and the scene was getting better. Stars just starting to come out, spot lights from the stage pointed towards the heavens - shining on Jerry. The collective buzz mellowing after a busy first set. What ARE they gonna open with? Sage & Spirit, BIG YAWN. Liberty would have been way way better. More snoozing with new Bobby song, Seven Hills. Then to Althea, an all time fav. WTF? It started really slow and it looked like it was going to crumble to dust just when John kicked it up a notch or six and they brought it back to life. I think Jerry got on their case, because they seemed inspired after the first 4-5 minutes of the song. Great interplay between John and Jeff. Fun watching that, like Brent and Jerry. OK, so back to expectations met? Mag Mountain was another yawner, but Sugar Mag brought things back. Disjointed show. Bi-polar. No More I do into Dark Star was respectable but not stellar, and Terrapin Suite, another all time fav, came on fairly strong but seemed to drop in and out, like a weak cellphone signal. Then came Stella, and John’s singing was brilliant - stole the show. They closed with an inspired UJB, and yes, Jerry was watching from his perch on Ursa Major’s handle.
No surprise with Saturday Night encore, but it was very nice to have Sunshine Daydream added. Perhaps they were trying to make up for the prior weaknesses in the show. Overall I’ll give it a 7.5 of 10 for the music. 9 of 10 when everything else is included (the venue, the views, the weather, the stars, the lot scene, etc.), but it’s really all about the music, right? I hope they play there again. And now on to Artpark. It’s gonna be hot.

FUCK GELSTON CASTLE !THANK you for ruining my July 4th weeekend drove 150 miles to the show booked a hotel and then, I waited over 3 hours in line to try to get into your fucking townie castle, I went 6/10 of a mile in 2 1/2 hours thanks to your shit show of a parking job !!! My car finally started to overheat, and I had to turn back at 8;00 pm after arriving at 5:15 , This is the ONLY show over the several hundred I have attended that I was not able to get into the venue because you treat GD fans like SHIT! Shut down all entrances to the place except one ?!?! and keep taking money from people while holding up 5 miles of traffic on a 2 lane road?! BULLSHIT MONEY MAKING COP TRAP IS ALL THAT PLACE WAS AND I WILL NEVER ENTER THAT FUCKING TOWN AGAIN IN MY LIFE ! FUCK YOUR CASTLE !!!
adam, downstate
I'm not gonna talk about the music, as it was truly exceptional--I wanna talk about the ordeal getting into the show. It took us 3-1/2 hours to go the last 3 miles. Why? Because at the last minute, the sleazeball promoter decided to try and shake down cars for a 10 dollar parking fee. There was one on lane road in and they were taking cars one at a time into the lot until about 7:10, then they stopped collecting. There were thousands of people still stuck in traffic when the show started around 8:15. I'M NOT EXAGGERATING! THERE WERE THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE STUCK IN TRAFFIC FOR 3-4 HOURS!!!
Bobby and Phil, I know you don't want to play in Live Nation venues, but this summer sucked! First the Shelburne show gets canceled (you never should have scheduled there in the first place! COMPLETELY INAPPROPRIATE LOCATION), then Gelston turns into a Woodstock like traffic nightmare! Please due your due diligence in the future and start making some smarter venue choices. It's not like you are rookies at this, but damn you are making rookie mistakes. Although the music was awesome, I WILL NEVER GO BACK TO HERKIMER AGAIN!!!!

A great show all around. This lineup is getting better, but I would have liked to see two drummers again. Nice to hear a new song, Seven Hills of Gold not a snooze gnatmadu, justr mellow. I like the venue but we heard about the bad traffic. We expected it. We scoped the scene on mapquest before the tour and took an alternate route from furthur east on NY thruway. Still it was over six hours from Columbus... Got there plenty early, NO TRAFFIC until at venue and that was only another 20 min from road to parked.
To the whiners, next time plan ahead, do a little research when going to a new venue, DO YOUR DUE DILIGENCE!! EXPECT HEAVY TRAFFIC AND DELAYS ON BACK COUNTRY ROADS AND PLAN ACCORDINGLY!!! DON'T BLAME THE BAND FOR YOUR STUPIDITY!! The venue was awesome, I hope they go back there, I will be there early again, in the sunshine, enjoying the scene

Granted traffic was unexpected and many people will not return to this castle but dont let it bring you down , its only castles burning, find someone whos turning and you will come around. That said, the concert itself was stellar and the events surrounding it rose my adreniline. Avoiding deer and oncoming cars in the wrong lane, lost hippies in the hills of Herkimer looking for the cars they left somewhere in the daylight and hey now its midnight and DARK. And was that a sobriety checkpoint? Where was the infromation police? Like turn here, traffic directors, etc. But as noted it was like the old days, Watkins Glen comes to mind but the show and lights and crowd made up for the hassles. The spiral light of Venus shining first and shining best... a rare and different tune...Amen

yeah the traffic was a bitch, but just past time by chatting and with other folks. as far as the $10 for parking,we put a piece of paper in the corner of the windshield and never got charged ! The day was beautiful, the band was hot, & the people were as cool as any crowd you could inagine. Sure it was BS waiting 3-4 hrs to get into the show, but as my friend kept saying, "There are worse places to be stuck". After about an hour, we opened some beers, talked with other folks, & started getting in the spirit of the day. I learned one thing... if you go to Gelston Castle, remember that the party is on the last stretch of road getting in & not in the parking lot. God willing I'll get a chance to see another show at Gelston, because despite the traffic jam, it was one of the best venues I've ever seen a show.
Dave Di Pietro, Cortland
my wife and i had a great time at this show. i'm not going to go into the setlist too much, but definitely a rockin' 1st set w/ some interesting jams in between. I think it's weird how at this site and official site don't list any of the jams. There was definitely a Mountain Jam out of Alligator> along w/ some china>rider jam along the way. also at coney Island they did a Supplication Jam during Uncle John's that nobody lists? Anyway the second set wasn't one of my favorites, but a good time all around. Mainly wanted to comment on the whiners also. The traffic did suck, but like comment above said plan ahead. I drove from VA to Coney Island and then to the coast of Northern ME. Left ME Friday and drove 11 hours to Gelston strait through. and growing up in upstate NY i knew it was most likely to be a Fuckarow so I went plenty early. Great vibe all around. I mail ordered to Penn's peak and unfortunately got shut down and decided to skip it even though i really wanted to go to avoid a hassle and possible big let down of not finding 2 tix. We r all gettin a little older now, so a little advise from someone who has seen over 300 shows. if u cant do it right don't do it at all and plan for a different show. Peace(~);}
joe , Richmond, VA
i got to the lot at about 3:30 hot in the lot but show was hotter. they need to do more to get people in faster... but this was the first real show they put on... hope they put many more... I THINK THEY WILL GET IT RIGHT...PEACE

This was a Grate show at a fabulous venue. I understand the kvetching about the drive in, but for those who made the show on time you have to admit this was a stellar night. The Street was Shakingdown and the night was Stella. I won't comment on the setlist too much except to say that I was hoping for a Dark Star and a Stella which I got and my son was hoping for a Terrapin and a Saturday Night which he got. FYI, we came in from the other side, via US 20 and County Rd 131 (Little Lakes Road) and there was so little traffic we were worried we had the wrong directions. We literally encontered no Heads and no traffic until we turned into the road to the parking lot (from there it was at least an hour to get parked). So if you ever go back, consider that route instead. Great to see the mix of young and old, and Phil smilin' all night long!! Peace, JP

If you like waiting in 3 hour lines to get to the show, and then getting interviewed by State Troopers on your way out and on the entrance to the Thruway this is your place to go. Shame on Bobby and Phil if they ever play there again. Their tour busses were right in front of me as we were leaving (of course they did not have to stop at the DWI check point like the rest of us did. I was not just stopped IWAS INTERVIEWED. And I am A New York city fire Lieutenant with short hair and I was totally sober. My crime apparantly was going to see music.

Mark Friz: We remember you there with your son. My wife, Denise, blond, was right next to you, front row, in front of Bob. She mention you guys a couple of thime days afterthe show. You said your son was hoping for Terrapin. Small world, I just read your review on 12/21/10. Any way.....
That was our first Futhur show and were very impressed. Parking was bad, but we got in early, got right in front and stayed there entire show. It was a great group of people up there and the show's sound was great. I've seen a few after that, but none compared to that night. Highlights, I thought were Golden Road, Alligator, Feelin Alright, Althea and Uncle John's, which gave it that family feeling. I hope they come back next year and we'll meet you guys up there. Next time I'll bring my son, he'll be 15 by then. Again, that was a great group up there. Remember John the Artist?
