Reviews
The show was fantastic. Great song selection and the new tunes were good, especially Mountain Song. Look forward to seeing Furthur again in the near future.

I showed up just hoping to hear Unbroken Chain..well, they blew my mind, not only did they play the song, they plaed around with it for what seemed like 45 minutes! It was unbleieveable. They jammed it into so many different incarnations, i even thought i heard a few chords that were flamenco style ... I just freaking ved it!

By the way, it was the worst Greek parking experience of all times last night

I felt like I'd been transported back to 1967! What a supremely amazing show: Remember the days when Phil just wouldn't sing?
Not so with Furthur! A very Phil-heavy show, in The Zone Baby!
Hearing such a magnificent version of Unbroken Chain, all the bells whistles and explorations you would expect from a classic early Dead show! I'm still a little gobsmacked and breathless from it all.

Hearing John Kadlecik's tender yet powerful version of Morning Dew was a concert highpoint for me. Very emotional. I surprised myself with how often I had to 'dry my eyes on the wind' last night.

Ramble On Rose found the band so tight, it was reminiscent of the Europe '72 shows. Controlled abandon reigned last night!
'Let It Grow' and Playing In The Band: Inimitable!

Sheer wonderstuff!

Good show, not great. I like hearing the old songs, but clearly not everyone in the joint was as enthusiastic.

Alligator>Caution was an ambitious way to open. I did not like the new song Muli Guli. Ramble on Rose was a nice singalong. And I always love Mason's Children.

I continued to have trouble hearing Bobby's guitar and vocals, which took away from the opening suite of the second set, but it was interesting to hear more old school songs.

The Other One was nice, but the highlight of the night for me was Unbroken Chain. Really well jammed out, Jeff was an allstar with his slightly dissonant jazzy playing. And they really extended the end of the song, which I don't really remember ever hearing jammed like that. Nice touch.

The rest of the show was good and I liked the Mountain Song too, but it was poorly placed. Really needed something like Terrapin or Eyes in that spot. Would have greatly improved the night, imo.

All in all, a fun time. There are things to pick on, but who can complain about a Furthur show in the gorgeous Greek Theater on a perfect late summer/early fall night?

MJ, Los Angeles
beer, booze acid and weed. I was hammered! I don't remember the show at all. I woke in a ditch on the side of the road with dry mouth. Bound to the load! Alone with rush of the drivers that won't pick me up. The highway, the sun the dirt and the barf.

Barf Chucker, Montebello
I'm an old 'head that saw the Dead around 70 times between '77 and '93. After Jerry Died, I let go of the the whole scene and explored mostly jazz. I recently saw some stuff about Furthur online and decided to check out anything Dead-related for the 1st time in over 15 years.

I was amazed. It was fuckin' hot!!! The band was very tight, very jazzy, in top form. I first noticed that the old 1st set/2nd set format was turned on its head. They opened with Alligator/Caution - very trippy. Also, John Hadlecik is a dead ringer (pun intended) for Jerry Garcia circa 1968 on vocals. Awesome hearing that familiar vocal sound in this context. The keyboard player Jeff Chimenti was also very good, adding some nice jazzy touches to some of the jams.

Needless to say I was very inspired by the show. Highlights were an AMAZING extended Unbroken Chain, and a Morning Dew that had me in tears.
I missed hearing more Garcia tunes (he was always my fave) but when I looked at other recent set lists, I realize that they're really mixing it up from show to show and I'll just have to start catching shows again to hear some of my favorite jams.

They ended the show with a short and sweet Box of Rain and when I heard Phil sing:

"Maybe you're tired and broken
Your tongue is twisted
with words half spoken
and thoughts unclear
What do you want me to do
to do for you to see you through
A box of rain will ease the pain
and love will see you through"

that was about all I could handle and couldn't hold back the tears from streaming down my cheeks. In that moment I felt a piece of my heart heal and some of my faith in the power of love and music come back to me.

My Jamaican wife had never seen the Dead although she had heard their music around the house. Not only did she enjoy dancing at the show, she was very impressed and told me that their music made her feel free.

It sure is great to be back on the bus with this incarnation of the greatest Rock n Roll band ever.

Long Live the Dead!

what absolutely amazes me, no matter what incarnation of The
Grateful Dead they be,is bobby and phil do not take for granted because they're bobby and phil everything will come out o.k.
These guys work hard, obviously rehearse, and keep 'futhuring'
their music. even both new songs last night were excellent.
the jamming, off the hook, haven't heard them do so many extended jams in a while
great, creative, inventive set list that feed off the crowd's energy all night, had kids as young as six dancing in the aisles in my section with us old schoolers and they never complained about the funny burning smell from our rows above
alligator/caution opener, ramble on rose
mason children ending first set
born cross eyed/new potato opening second set, mountain song
and morning dew were all stellar but the absolute best unbroken chain, i've ever experienced live
crowd and security were real cool, parking guys could have used some more training, but people were patient
thanks for the box, phil, and keep the journey going furthur with bobby and jeff, jay, john, pherson and sunshine

It was a good show last night. Definitely not great. And not on the level of the shows in OR and WA. The highlight was certainly Unbroken Chain. I think Mountain Song needs some work. I like the chorus. But wasn't too enthusiastic about the version last night. They played a lot of old stuff which was really cool. I think the guys need to get a nice day of rest and be ready to rock in LV and Morrison the next few nights. I would have loved to hear Wharf Rat in place of Mountain Song last night. The crowd was pretty cool. But lacking when compared to the other shows so far this tour. LA heads are cool. But there was a mix of older more buttoned up people in the crowd that were pretty whack. No offense y'all. See you in Vegas.

Yeah, the parking situation last night at the Greek was pretty bad. We were about 15 minutes late because of it. But when they rolled out "Unbroken Chain" and "Morning Dew," all the hassles were worth it...

Dear Phil,
Love ya man but singing 6-7 songs a night??? COME ON MAN!
Show was a solid 5 outta 10. VERY AVERAGE. GREAT playing but the setlist...meh. There's a reason some of those songs were "forgotten" back in 1968.

absolutly NO reason Phil should be singing that many songs a night. UB Chain, great, Box, Awesome...the rest, (shulder shrug)!

keep it clean on the scene, SoCal
The difference between Santa Barbara and the Greek was immense. Whereas the former was an enjoyable but not memorable evening, the show at the Greek was an INSTANT CLASSIC. The set list was powerful, early Dead, no covers, and the Band was TIGHT, no doubt inspired by the energy and Phil calling out the jam and tempo changes through the Band's patented earphone system--we could see him make the calls from our place in the 3rd Row. So it's back to the future---run, don't walk, to catch this iteration, the Dead is very much ALIVE and KICKING!

Steven, Calabasas
Realized this was my 44th year of seeing some of these guys. I was impressed at the bravery in the set list. They took some real chances. Which is the greatest thing about the Dead. With that said the mix was really off. All due respects to the Rhythm Devils that drummer was unbelievable. Keyboards the best they've ever had.
Phil and Bobby at the top of their game. Any songs they did crackled with energy. But the lead guitar just seemed like a cover band guy. He's good a riff at a time. But can't connect the riffs together. This was accentuated when he traded riffs with Phil. Phil would explode with energy and power and he would come back with a fairly standard rock riff. I think these guys should do a tour where they throw out the Dead playlist and just start over. Seek a whole new sound. The Greek was a terrific party scene.

This show was sweet... I don't know how somebody could complain about John K. I know it is hard to compare anybody to Jerry, but he was in the pocket all night with soulful and tasteful licks (great tone also). Phil and Bob were both on fire. The drummer is really kicking things into high gear (especially during "the other one")... I am pretty sure that we stepped outside of time as we know it. Oh yeah, Jeff on keyboards is awesome... Love the B3...

I thought it was great hearing all of those old songs too.

What shall we say shall we call it by a name? How about those angels?

Andy, Lake Arrowhead
this show was just ok. 7 th furthur show this year and the 7 th best. the pre party was great, pretty much a free for all. im an 80's and 90's and beyond dead head and i was bored with the song selection. sorry old schoolers !!

I agree that this show was just ok. Certainly Phil's basslines were tremendous all night, including his Other One bomb, but Bobby seemed distant and tired and his vocals were out of the mix. Great drums and keyboards - nice work! Song selection was not great - I agree with the reviewer that there was a reason Jerry et al pulled the plug on the really old stuff years ago, it's just not that good. But I guess Bobby and Phil enjoy playing them again. And please do not remove Rider from China Cat - brought the energy waaaay down. Vegas setlist looks like it was far better and better energy all around...

While I would've rather seen the next show in Vegas...this one was special. A 'trip' back to the late 60's. A 'get back to our roots' show. Unbroken Chain took me to places in my mind and heart I havn't been in a long time. The best was when Phil teased the crowd just before he 'stomped' on his base for the beginning of 'Other One'...preceded by freakin' Cryptical...wow. At that moment the lights illuminated the frenzied crowd while some fan heaved a full beer forwards (I swear the visual traveled 25 rows). Hair standing on the back of my neck :) What an amazing band...they still got it, to say the least. I met the greatest people...I love you all. And to the young man I gave an 8 X 10 of Jerry from Compton Terrace, while in line to get the show on disc...peace my brother.

folks, please don't be such starry-eyed fans that you can't distinguish a rockin show from a bummer. i love the boys, but this show left me flat. phil, dude, you are the world's greatest bass player. that's enough. box of pain was a downer even back in the day. now 7 phil songs in one night? and as an encore? are you kidding? bobby, where the hell were you? and why won't you two let the new guy sing???? of course he's not jerry, but at least he rocks! this show was like going to a ball game and your team falls behind by 5 runs in the first inning. ramble on rose - excellent. mountain dew - excellent. other one - excellent. most of the rest was frikkin drag. 2 out of 10.
