Love this band, but I am ok with first sets being first sets...maybe a candyman, BT Wind, or high time. They play the hits way too often. The 11 is like every 4th night. Its like really selling out.
You know tonight will be darkstar, O1, eyes, HSF, rider, alligator, terrapin, caution, jack straw, sailor>saint, etc. Mark my words.

Show was smoking from the word 'go', with a thundering Shakedown. Sounded like the soundboard guys had it dialed in just right. Nice and loud on the floor. Took many by surprise. And very sweet transition into Estimated with a nice chunky bass note on the one to start things off.
Jerry guy from DSO was really blending well with Bobby and Phil, making the vocals soar on the very tasty Cold Rain and Snow. Many folks were singing along.
Second set started much slower but eventually go cookin' right around Scarlet->Fire, which featured a rocking Fire on the Mountain with very throaty vocals that again had people singing in the audience.
The light show was great, too, particularly from the stands where you could see the whole pattern.
Very crowded but mellow and crowd featured a new crop of 20 somethings, that seemed a little new to the concept of dancing to the Dead, so it was up to us old folks to keep things moving, but eventually by GDTRFB the crowd was truly groovin'.
"...don't tell me this town ain't got no heart, cuz I can feel it beat OUT LOUD..."

Shakedown>Prophet>Crazy Fingers to open the night? Wow! Then *finally* 2 songs I've been wanting to hear and back to back no less - Cold Rain and Snow and Tenn Jed!! Whheeeee!!! Damn John nailed em! The entire second set may very well be the single best Furthur set I have witnessed. China>Stephen>Scarlet>Fire are you serious??!!?? Bobby really sings the hell out of DDHNM sends chills up and down my spine. Sunshine and Jeff singing on Attics is unreal I just love it!

"At first I thought they were speeding up time, or maybe slowing it down, or maybe slowing it down and speeding it up at the same time. In any case in-between the notes a door would appear and open, revealing a myriad worlds, then low and behold another note would arise." That is the poem I wrote right after the show. Several weeks later I still feel the influence of that show.
When seeing the setlists I cant disagree with Joe about how much they play the hits , but when listening to them, especially live it is so fresh and new. I have heard 'Playin in the Band' many times but the way they played it that night was just so freakinly hauntingly beautiful, it will stay with me forever.
I cannot express how much there music means to me. Hope they come home to play in the Bay area soon!
ps I love all the new guys, I think Jeff is the best GD pianist ever, and like Joe, but I do miss BILL and MICKEY! keep Joe and do a show with them as weill!

ps "Seven Hill of Gold" is a sweet new tune! so is "Any Road", at least I haven't heard it before. Also the back up singers are nice, have heard them several times, my vote would be to give them more play room sometimes!
