Reviews
Great show...great run. The Caution was a total meltdown. A lot of energy coming from the stage last night and the crowd was giving it back!! Phil was on fire and when Phil is on, the band is ON!!! Ain't that the truth..

Smokin! Great closing night for phila. Jeff rocked the dupree's on the keys to soul shakin satisfaction!

In my opinion, furthur sounds best when they get as close as possible to the GD sound. I think the best examples of this are Bobby songs, arranged and played like the dead played 'em. (NOT 12 minute long West LA Fadeaways with Bob inserting extra measures in the verses or JK covering ryan adams).
Good examples from this show: Greatest Story, Let it Grow, and Sailor/Saint. Especially Lost Sailor; no back up vocals or keyboard where there should be guitar lead etc. This show's Lost Sailor really captures the GD sound.

The jam into Truckin' at the beginning of set II is a "Love Supreme" jam.

I could only get to the closing of this run and I wasn't disappointed one bit. GSET to close that 3 song half hour opening was terrific. Truckin' to start the second set smoked. And my personal highlight....Nobody Girl > China Doll - both played to perfection. Taking a half day to head up to Radio City for tonights show. Here's hoping for another summer weekend at the Mann.

It's possible my review might be colored a bit by the fact that security was very aggressive frisking us coming in and we lost half a Z but i'll get on with it. Besides that, i thought the tower is a neat little place perfectly suited to great sound which the boys delivered. Between the incident (which gratefully was the only problem inside all night) and a highly aggressive police prescence outside that quickly cleared shakedown..............i gotta say i wouldn't choose to go back even though it's only a 95 mile jaunt and a perfect small place. Hopefully our loss and a handful of post show arrests were the only problems encountered. I had seen Phil and friends there for a run a few years back and didn't recall ANY problems.
Musically, i thought the band was very sharp in first set. Every song was strong. I thought they peaked during an excellent greatest story and then a fairly rare Dupree's diamond blues. Very good set and i haven't seen too many duprees or lost sailor's in my 170 shows to ever complain.
I was hoping they might come out and blow the roof off in 2nd set. Tried to guess which songs were left and picked a few (no terrapin). I was hoping they might cap off a 5 show run with something unique. Personally, i thought they downshifted during second set. Maybe it's just me but although caution was interesting............i just thought that the LONG interlude from truckin-UJB was too low key to keep up the momentum. I hate to say it but i'm not a fan of nobody's girl. It wasn't bad and strongly reminded me of a "jerry band ballad". I just thought it didn't really go anywhere except for a morning dew riff on guitar. It reminded me of something along the lines of "believe it or not". Just a LONG song that either isn't a vehicle for jamming or the boys chose not to............just didn't go anytwhere.
Hey, i love virtually anything the guys have ever thrown at me but it just didn't grab me and i thought going into china doll was a poor choice...........only because it made essentially the first half of the set pretty, jazzy and too low key. The momentum of a very strong initial set wasn't followed up as well as i hoped.
Personally i thought a "2nd gear" set was salvaged by a very good scarlet. The best song of the set. I love midnight hour but i've seen much better versions. A good Johnny B Goode capped the set. I keep catching that one and not my brokedown that i haven't seen for a while.
Part of the problem is only seeing one show a tour. I'm (of course) GRATEFUL to be able to see anything at all but one show is so hit or miss. Still haven't caught my Deep Elem, Dark Hollow or only a few others...........so i'll be back but i wish i had been able to catch 3 of the 5.
Again, I'm as thrilled as anyone that bob and phil are still going at it but i've seen a ton better shows since jerry died including some absolute never will forget em's. This wasn't one of them. Honestly, it's pretty low on the list of the 55+ i've seen since jerry passed away. It didn't have anywhere near the energy of the last one i caught in NOV in my hometown. Very well played with great energy.
Since i don't know what went on earlier in the week, i can't really comment on the police but i've NEVER seen any "shakedown" cleared that quickly. Tanks killed, arrests and more than ten cars on the two levels really moving people on.................like they wanted folks out in literally 15 minutes. Compared to baltimore which only had problems regarding the sale of alcohol outside...........this was bad..............just bad vibes. I will say that pre show was cool.
Maybe i just need a warm weather show. At least there wasn't ice like in fairfax last year but it was dreary and cold which makes three straight. Sadly, i had the thought i'm getting a bit old for the hassle. I was straight (or pretty close to it) when i entered and have never been frisked like that. My dumbass went in early to get out of the cold and my buddy paid the price. I got through after having my crotch grabbed, shoes checked and having to empty my pockets or explain everything i had. Never been through anything like it. I'm clean cut and was only mildly buzzed. (my X made it through in my sock). Probably bad timing on my part but the financial loss dimmed the evening so maybe it's sour grapes. Just getting too old for putting myself at risk or risk by association
I've been to probably over 1000 assorted concerts and have never been frisked like that. At least my buddy wasn't arrested but it was miles from cool.
To each their own but my personal opinion was it was an uneven show. A strong, tight first set was followed by a weak second set. Musically, each guy had highlights, the acoustics and sound was great. I guess my issue was the 30+ minute gap between upbeat tunes in the 2nd set. In the old days ida been thrilled to see anything as adventurous or unpredictable and loved the jazzy jams (playin, eyes, D star) but it was a bit too much of a loss of momentum for me.
