Simpsonville is a Southern town with functioning railroad dating back to the Civil War.
The Show: No charge for parking. The scene looked pretty spread out. We arrived two hours before show and got paved parking under big trees.We literally walked right up to the gate for will call and no line had formed to get in.
I was able to purchase 7th row center stage tickets the night before the show which enticed me out of more camping up on Mt. Pisgah, N.C. (You have not lived until you go down Sliding Rock into a Carolina stream or go underneath Looking Glass falls.
When I toured back in the day I took any seats I could get for a show, just to get in was a privilege most of the time especially with needing to vend to tour.
It was super sweet to be standing right in front of the stage. I checked out J.K. backstage and he really has a mellow disposition. I am glad that the spirit of Garcia’s music is continuing on in this way and with this young man and also with bands like DSO. Since this is the only show of the tour for me I don’t know how it ranks with the rest of the tour but I will tell you the jams were even more involved then my last show UCF-Orlando this Spring.(see review) 1) Music =nice jam--- “might not never stop” (100+ degrees at show time)
How can you go wrong with Music as an opener! 2) B.E. Woman = enjoyed Phil singing the “looks like the old man is getting on”
Son noticed me crying beneath my sunglasses.
3)Looks like Rain= so mellow-this romance tune works much better in the first set.
4)Dupree’s = too heavy on the keyboard, also J.K. has a great voice but this song demands a little irony at times. A work in progress perhaps!
5)Candyman=Worked better than Dupree’s (nice harmonies) “pretty women!”
6)Me and My Uncle=Bob owns this tune! Weir can still sing like a wanted man!!
7)>Maggie’s Farm=this is now more a Bobby tune yet I really liked this tune more during the Brent /Bruce eras when everyone took a verse but this one still rocked.
8)REVOLUTION= I haven’t heard a Rev- since way back Nassau-and then it was an encore. a timeless song!
Break:We went down to the misty showers which seemed to be a pretty well kept secret.
My son was kinda dragged to this show by me and I wasn’t sure about going back into the thick of things but really the band was on and 7th row! The pit wasn’t heavily policed externally/good separation for those who wanted seats whereas the aisles and the rail were more wild. So back to the 7th row /neighbors very kind /encouraged my 11 yr old. Or as Bob said in the day, “get up and dance it won’t ruin you”
Set Two:
1)Box of Rain=Always welcomed! [Remember the years without this song live?]
2)Dear Mr. Fantasy =I always do “Hey Jude” harmonies.
this tune so benefits from it’s now more random set placement.
3)ESTIMATED=WoW! They picked it up a notch and kept on going!!
4)>EYES=Always liked this pairing of tunes- nice to hear Phil singing! (favorite-EST>EYES- Englishtown 77)

In my fantasy sets of old I tinkered with Scarlet this late in a second set but always figured it implausible? This really worked/ band in serious jam mode all night.

Wasn’t sure if we would get the ‘Fire’ –No concept of time or how long they had been playing already up to that point.
How nice is a set that contains EST>EYES , STEPH>11>Marbles, SCARL>FIRE with a Box for set two opener a Mr. Fantasy and Days Between as the ballad!!!
Note: On Thursday, July 28th we were in Asheville, N.C. and there was a horrific blaze downtown in one of the Hi-Rise medical buildings by the Hospital. Six firefighters were injured, one burned critically and one Fire Captain lost his life going into a building making sure everyone had gotten out safely.
Toward -the encore:
Glad to see Phil out there giving ‘donor rap’. I am extremely squeamish but if physically dead, it seems selfish not to give up whatever someone else could use to go on living.

I got to say the drummer is giving Bill a run for the money especially in the insane heat.

Post show: Got a little lost in the parking lot walking out to car after the show and security actually let us back in venue so we could go out entrance first came in.
My son is progressing slowly on the music side of things but I will tell you one thing he faced down a black bear up in the Blue ridge -“Spent a little time on the mountain, Spent a little time on the hill

I lived for a bit at the base of Pisgah, hiked Looking Glass Rock by moonlight and many a time over, and of course enjoyed the company of the Cheshire Cat from the other side of the Falls on these excursions. Used to dance at the top of the Parkway to Workingman's Dead for late night fun ~ to really groove on those Cumberland Blues.......Blue Beauty is everywhere to behold in this neighbor Land of Waterfalls.

SC was HOT!!! The best way to sum it all up would be to pay tribute to the bright and burning STAR that Furthur has lit......

This show was top of the heap. Best show of the tour?
Certainly the best of the 3 I saw (Simpsonville, Raleigh, Alpharetta) [in the order of my preference]
From the first note of Music to the last note of Attics everything was excellent. Even Phil's vocals were sounding good! Looks Like Rain was awesome, but really every song could be put on a "highlights" list. The venue was sweet, no roof so the sound was great in the whole venue. The volume was turned up louder than the downtown Raleigh show. Wide aisles filled with dancers and a spacious lawn.

This was the best show of the 10 or so Furthur shows I've seen since they started this band. I don't usually listen to recordings of Furthur, but I might have to check out the tapes of this one. Good song choices, good playing, and good singing.
