I am sure that catching a show at this historic venue had to be a real treat.
Not meaning to be negative but I was not to impressed musically with this first set
1st set- Promised-seems like Bobby's a little off tempo with his lyrics (no real jam)
Easy Wind-Might consider just jamming this tune without any vocals because right now you have no jam and very weak vocals. This was a Pigpen tune
Pride-always like this tune but this is not so strong a version as Eugene from this tour.
Mission-Let JK sing this
Two Djinn-This is the longest tune of the first set kinda like a mellower version of Victim.
Candyman-Only problem here is the one part of this tune gets me thinking exclusively about Jerry "The Candyman is in Town"
Mason's- this was a weak song way back when and only the back-up vocals and some riffs by JK help this out
>Quinn- Talk about pulling a rabbit out of a hat.
Finally sounds like the band is firing on all cylinders.
Set Two:
Any Road-Interesting tune!
Estimated-Bobby can play this song any time, any place for my money (Sunshine's vocals very nice)
>Deal-Good tune selection choice.(Best Deal I ever heard was in Vegas at that outdoor dust bowl with Jerry.)
Again the backing vocals really help this song along.
(They are singing "whoaa, whoa, Whooaa"
and we finally get some jams here- The keys sound very nice with Jk's lead.
>Playing-This is a nice long one
The vocals are a little scattered here to open, every once in a while they ought to play this as an instrumental we all know the lyrics already it would give them a chance to just jam. Once they get throught the opening lyrics they just launch jamming into arriving at >Dark Star they go into the first verse rather quickly and then the best jam of the night unfolds and I really hear Phil in the mix.
The Jam after the second verse of Dark Star is very trippy and brings us to a >Caution which is enhanced by the backing vocals yet again and phil and Jk just blazing along. Just about a total meltdown here, I bet there was some serious dancin going on during this tune!
Not really picking up what Bob is rapping about but the "All you Need's" are sweet in response.
Wow the band is just letting loose!!!>KSM- See this just really works it has no vocals to slow it down and it is open enough for exploration yet structured enough that everything keeps moving forward. i know we don't get an official drumz anymore but this highlights the drummer very nicely thank you. I wonder how many people decide not to go on the november tour during the weak first set only to start calculating distances during this strong second set.
Everything after KSM is cake. Wow turn Prudence over to J.K on the vocals. Sunshine is towering over this song. Jerry Band would just light this tune up. Always leave me bawling "like a little child" How about a 'Lucy in the sky' that was one of the few Vince era tunes I really enjoyed. I never realized how similar Lucy and Prudence are??
Wow! You just gotta let JK have the lead vocal on this.
Unbroken Chain- This song is actually stronger now then when phil brought it back in the 90's with the Dead. I have always enjoyed this tune. I had an old bootleg with a bunch of Wake of the Flood material and I just wore it out.
It sounds like Phil could use a little back-up vocal help with this tune. One of my favorite Phil tunes was a 73- Box of Rain with the Dino's and Donna Jean. anyway Unbroken is such a great tune. Big jam in the middle passage-Just vintage Dead!!!
Gotta go enjoy the rest of this show!!!
