Set 1- Stranger-yeah, the opportunity to jam on this tune is taken advantage of here.
I wonder how many folks besides Bobby and Phil could say they were at the pop festival all those years ago.
They show that festival on PBS every once in awhile or on the Palledium channel, most people focus on the Who and Jimmi Hendrix and they did go nuts but my favorite was Ravi Shankar. Too bad the Dead got left out of the movie just like they would at Woodstock. Anyway the Dead's music will outlive 99% of the acts at those two festivals.
Althea- one of those songs that should just get a mellow mood going. Nice piano througout. JK does not look like at first glance that the fullness of Garcia's voice should come from his lips but it certainly does.
both Stranger and Althea in at over 11 minutes each.
School girl-the stream I am listening to has this starting on a dime. This is a fun number! Just straight ahead rocker with some slide. Weir scares the children yet again!
I wish Brent had lived long enough to try his hand at some Pigpen standards.
No More Do I- they don't play this very much but it is a very strong tune and the lyrics are easy to follow. It can lend itself well to either a first or second set.
>Friend- I give Furthur credit this is a better version then the Dead did in the 80s and 90s. I like this tune with some pep in it's step
>Viola Lee Blues- A great vehicle for jamming, it works in the first set pretty nicely here. I guess it depends on whether you like your viola spread across a few other songs or whether you would rather have it straight up in one dose. To me in the first set I just want to hear them cutting loose and that is exactly what they do. And the jam at the end is fierce and they bring it back down to earth
>Comes a Time-I really like hearing Sunshine backing this already wonderful tune .
Nice jam leading right into
>Throwing Stones- My Politics have changed so much over the years and the world has changed too but this song with a few minor adjustments is still pretty on target.
(It is only by the grace of GOD that I am walking this earth)
If you ever get the chance to see the Throwing Stones video from SO FAR the Dead give us a heavy history lesson
-- Wow this first set might be equal to many a second set from the 93-95 era

Set Two
Golden Road (to Unlimited Devotion) -->
it is great to have this song back in the fold. Previously you had to listen to something from 1966 to hear this tune
d2t05. Shakedown Street -->
will never be the same without Jerry that is a given but Furthur delivers a nice disco ball laced version of this tune. Phil is really leading the charge here!
d2t06. Truckin' -->
Back in the day when my son was coming into this world
I found myself singing this song to my lady, it was the only thing that came into my head.
I know the doctor's had to be puzzled but it made my wife smile.
d2t07. Let It Grow -->
This is almost like a ballad at this point in the show.
I am still hopeful of catching the full Weather Report suite live at some point.
d2t08. All Along the Watchtower -->
This song will always remind me of those incredible 80's shows when literally hundreds of people would be spinning and dancing in perfect harmony.
Dylan rolled it, Jimmi lit it, but the boys smoked it!
d3t01. Morning Dew -->
Have you ever heard the original version of this song? I bet you Sunshine could handle that arrangement nicely!
d3t02. Help on the Way --> Slipknot! -->
Interesting to hear the vocals on this, you already know the jam is going to be great
d3t03. The Eleven -->
Just to whip into the Eleven is pretty cool.
People who don't get Phil , (vocals and all) -really don't get the music.
From 73 to 86 Phil just stepped away from many of the gems he helped to create but his playing was on!
After 86 phil stepped back up to the microphone but pretty much let the rest of the band call the shots as far as tune selection.
Today you get the same great music plus Phil opening up and giving us glimpses into the inner workings of his creativity. (Still like to hear him do 'broken arrow' again.)
d3t04. Franklin's Tower
So i like hearing phil sing Franklin's , it totally works for me. Phil was singinging all these years but now he is singing with more than his bass.
There is some good keyboard work here too on Franklin's
d3t05. Donor Rap
d3t06. One More Saturday Night
Bob Weir is a pretty incredible with the lyrics. I know he is aging just like the rest of us but he has got to have the biggest active song library next to Dylan. Weir pretty much has his whole catalog out there nightly to choose from well except for Money, Money.
If you are vending and are inside then a standard encore gets you headed for the lot at double time but even a standard encore can be hot.
I used to get ticked off when i would be at a blazing show and oh my here comes Day Job but you know what Jerry could shred on that tune too.(and it certainly was a true commentary on that era)
I would say that JK has been so important to this musical revival just listen to his playing on this show and some nice riffs on this encore.
It would seem to me a distraction to worry about if his vocals are up to jerry's which would be impossible just like no two snowflakes are the same, There was something about Garcia I could feel all that joy and yes sorrow in his voice and his playing. but JK is his own person with his own experience in life. I like the Beatles influence on JK.
I mean JK singing 'SOMETHING' is like combining Garcia and the Beatles perfectly.
Last thought-I'd say the Uncle John's at Red Rocks this tour must have been so sweet! (how is that for stating the obvious) La LALA LALA LA!!!

The Second set from this show is really hot.
A great song list and just very well played.
I am listening to it again while waiting for more East Coast shows to become available.
Additional comments-Phil's bass lines!!!
Bobby searching for the right words during Watchtower while Phil just goes to town.
Also during Slipknot! Phil is on!!.
And the vocals are BEAUTIFUL in the Eleven
This is the season of what now"
Transition into the Franklin's will give you whiplash or is that flashbacks!
This is just a great set. SELL EVERYTHING!
