Reviews
Columbus-A classic first set with 7 from back in the day including a super rare Deal opener , three from Workingman's and a Quinn the Eskimo chaser.
It has been a good tour for those of us who find the first set crucial to a second set launch:
Nude Hampster-10 minute Playing opener
fierce Pride of Cucamonga
Bertha>Good Lovin to end the set.
Maine-Passenger opener, varied tune selectiion and a huge Stranger with a beautiful B.E. to close
Wilkes Barre-A set that gathered in intensity building up to Music,Casey Jones!
Amherst-Foolish Heart opener lots of relationship songs with a trippy Doing that rag mid-set. and a blow out Top of the World to close.
Virginia-A very strong set, very diverse from Aiko to Miracle. A nice up tempo Friend, Phil on Tom Thumbs a super stretched out 12 minutes of West L.A. Always lovely China Doll and then a monster Cumberland that rocked so hard it carried over thru Promised Land closer.
MSG-A second set first set with guests!!!(love the fiddle)
Syracuse-the biggest ol ALLIGATOR opener wrecked havoc on the rest of the set for me. A bit of vocal slip during Loser but B.E. Jack Straw and then a nod to the Carrier Dome with Revolution!
Atlantic City-if any town on the tour is a contrast of in your face wealth and bitter poverty besides the big Apple it is Atlantic City-this is an edgy first set.
Buffalo-Wow talk about a road trip, double time to Buffalo
from Atlantic city on Saturday after playing Syracuse on a Friday-Music is a great opener and Alabama>Greatest has a strong history, nice to hear Built to Last it sometimes got lost in the Touch of Grey era. Phil singing Operator is worth the ticket price in full. need more mojo so let's take Gimme Some Lovin from Set Two and use it to close Set One with the ninth tune of the set.
Albany-Better to go down the Erie canal then to be in the middle of troubling times at State College, P.A.
andHere Comes Sunshine!!! with a beautiful Row Jimmy to follow- A strong Minglewood, Dire Wolf, Loose Lucy and then Cosmic Chalie closer!
Columbus-As mentioned mighty classic set list! the blogs say look no further
but looking Furthur
Chicago-They liked that Garden Sugar Mag so they pulled it out again in Chi-Town, a rare Ash/Glass, another Pride!!!
Peaceful Valley is a Jerry tune after Garcia left the bldg.
and unlike MSG they hit the SSD to close set one.
Madison, WI-A Golden Road opener (so far the only Golden Road of the tour in the first set)
Miracle>Wang Dang>Miracle-not compatible back in the 80's but Miracle has slowed and Wang Dang has quickened
A rare Must Have Been the Roses-Gotta like Sat Night to close the first set it removes the encore possibility and you can dance without one foot headed toward the lot.
---Two shows yet to come and just look at the first set diversity. It wasn't until the middle of the 6th show that the first repeat of the first set occured.
My favorite first set tune this tour---ALLIGATOR!!!!
and finally the most underated first set tune of all time that was a disaster as an encore;
"GOD BLESS THE CHILD WHO HAS HIS OWN STASH,
NINE TO FIVE AND A PLACE TO CRASH"
