Todd Smith, Garland Texas
Brother Todd Smith the best I can tell you is :
Hopefully this music will outlive all of us
The music carried on after Pigpen was gone,
"In the heat of the sun a man died of cold"
The music carried on after Keith was gone
"My old buddy you are movin much to slow"
The music carried on after Brent was gone
"I gotta go but my friends can stick around"
And yes this music will carry on without Garcia
"When the last rose of summer pricks my finger"
Best to enjoy what we have while we still have it then to look back and long for what we have lost because it is already past.
And I write that as someone whose wife died very young.
"And nothings gonna bring..."
With all my heart I believe the Bible when it says that one day there will be a reckoning. (But that's a deeper question which each of us faces in his own time.)
But to your question?
First off I am working my butt off here in Fl waiting for Spring Tour, listening to streams of this tour.
and then getting into archive.org to hear the shows again.
And you were there in St. Louis!
"Shake the hand that shook the hand"
Did you know that the only place on this tour they played Mama Tried and Peggy-o was in St. Louis?
Also you got a first set Samson closer!!!
Phil did a second set Box of Rain opener. Phil is so much in the mix now. His bass is just thundering
Bob did a nice 2nd set Let it Grow! And really is there anyone besides maybe Dylan who has as many lyrics down as Weir.
Did you notice how the new guitar player John K. pulled out a Reuben and Cherise also did a second set Comes a Time.
How about the drummer Joe Russo back there holding down the fort kinda like Bill K. back in the day.
The Lone female is Garcia's daughter and she must have grown up around Donna Jean because she can hit all the sweet spots just right.
Also notice Jeff Pehrson his vocals are letting the band spend more time on key bridges in songs like the sweet Rio Grande transition in Half Step. that was 13:00 minutes of 1/2 step!
How about the keyboard player many times Jeff C is playing lead piano and keys!
How about the way this band is finding new avenues and vista's like that Help>Slip and then they went off into a Caution > New Speedway Boogie > Dear Prudence and wham right back to Slipknot! > Franklin's Tower
and how about a Johnny B encore if you are not vending how could you not be rocking out to that classic.
If this show did not do it for you look at some of the set lists and then go listen to a few shows on the archives.
The whole band has had to grow to bring that sizzle back, it is not just everyone follow where the guitar player leads anymore just as when Pig left us- Lovelight and all those blues tunes had to change.
Musically, in my humble opinion-This is the best it has been since Bruce Hornsby split"
"Built to Last til sunlight fails and darkness moves on all"
C. Freedom, Fl
Todd was kinda write about a big hole were Jerry would have been.
But this was (the St. Louis show, Fox Theater), The best show that I have seen since the mid 90's.
Steve P, Carlinville, IL
Great night!! Phil made Peggy-O his that night!!! i am still at a loss for words.
Melted Face, K.C.
I didn't start listnening to the dead until ~04, so I never knew Jerry's playing first-hand. I am very familiar with the tapes, though, and this show was better than anything I can think of post-mid 80's. I was third row right in front of Phil, and it was outstanding. To quote the great Norman Dale, "I would hope you support who we are, not who we are not." BTW - not to be picky, but Sunshine Garcia is NOT Jerry's daughter. Just a coicidental name.
I was at the Chaifitz last year, and this was much better. You can really hear how another year of playing together has helped.
spyguy, St. Louis
Hey Spyguy my bad I had just assumed that was Garcia's daughter.
I am glad we both agree on FURTHUR having it together!
If you really want to get a flavor for Garcia in the 80's and 90's seek out his stuff with JGB because to me even up until the last Jerry Band tour I went on which was Halloween 1993 that is where Jerry really let loose.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!
C. Freedom, Fl
My friends and I had a BLAST! Some folks have been dogging Bob of late, but his vocals were DEAD on! That "Caution" was mind-blowing! phil was a the top of his game.
